I agree, it's a small touch but really nice one.
My old droid incredible running cyanogenmod had that animation as well, and I remember my brothers being captivated by it when they saw it over my shoulder.

Yes, just like an old TV. Little things like that, that make the experience better than most. No branding, speed, ease of use...I love pure android!

I just wish I could set the stock SMS system to black background. I know there are plenty of aftermarket setups...but I usually just don't like em that much....

I agree. its on nexus S(waiting for my nexus 4) and even my iPhone friend told me that its a beautiful effect.
He loved it.
