Laggy / sluggish controls (Dual Shock 4 + OnePlus One + Mame4Droid)

I was so psyched, I paired a dual shock 4 to my oneplus one for the first time this weekend. Fired up mame4droid to play some Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara.

Unfortunately, I can't do basic motions. Double tap, quarter circle, down up. The controls feel laggy, sluggish. I might pull off a successful double tap or down / up one out of ten times. I've yet to pull off a successful quarter circle.

Has anybody else experienced this? I thought bluetooth controls would be leaps and bounds better than touch controls. Should I try USB OTG cable instead?

Ordered a cheap USB OTG cable, will give it a try this weekend.

Ah, should've searched more thoroughly first. Looks like I should give the BT Auto Connect app a try:
