Last seen on hangouts but not reading messages, how do you know if the message was read?

last seen on hangouts but not reading messages

I was wondering what it meant when hangouts shows your contact was last seen e.g. just now or 20 mins ago, but they haven't read your message what does that mean is it that the message wasn't sent correctly?

Hi - no it just means they haven't opened the message. I could be replying to someone else on Hangouts and have an unread message - so this would show I was last seen on Hangouts a couple of minutes ago, but haven't / didn't open the unread message.

I also wouldn't relay on it too much. For example, right now it says my wife is "online" but she's lying sleeping beside me
