Latest rumors: Name change, plan changes, release before Xmas

I am guessing that a few weeks ago the change was made to rename to the Nexus Prime. They had to repackage all of the old Galaxy Nexus into the new boxes, probably with a matching manual as well. This led to the initial delay, with the hopes of it being released by black friday. Then, unexpected software issues popped up and delayed it further.
Just my hunch in expecting to see a Nexus Prime on launch day.

Considering that Verizon has already announced that it is releasing a "Galaxy Nexus" at some point, it would be monumentally weird for them to change the name at this late date. Especially for no discernable purpose.

I dunno, the "name change" wouldn't really be that surprising, would it? I mean, maybe "Galaxy Nexus" is just what "Galaxy SII" is; a general model, that is given specific branding depending on the carrier it's released for. Aren't the Galaxy SII phones getting specific names for the carriers they're releasing on? Maybe the Galaxy Nexus will be the same deal, and "Nexus Prime" is the name that the Verizon version will be called?

I really can't even believe that people are STILL bringing up this "Nexus Prime" nonsense. Ridiculous. Please, think of how many different ways that makes absolutely no sense. It doesn't jive with ANYTHING we have seen so far, aside from a Best Buy ad that they ALREADY claimed was a mistake and have since corrected, and some anonymous dude, who we don't know, who happens to be the ONLY person saying this.

Folks, EVERYTHING is pointing at it being called the Galaxy Nexus. Everything from rumored release dates and MAP documents and internal e-mails, all the way up to both the official websites of Google US, Samsung Mobile US, and Verizon Wireless.

While I agree its unlikely it would make sense to differentiate between the models. This would make a lot of things more simple from updates, tech support, buying accessories, etc. Basically anytime you same the name.

There have been a lot of times when I go to buy accessories for a product and don't go with a certain vendor because I'm not sure they are selling me the correct part.

Thing is, a company like Verizon is unlikely to make a name change at the last moment. The promotional campaigns and accessories lines are planned well ahead of time. Google might also have a say in the matter. Would they really want their supposedly unitary developer phone being split up into carrier brands?

My comments on why this latest rumor is unlikely:

>1. The name will be the Nexus Prime.

There is no way they will be changing the name now. They have been promoting the GN name for too long, packaging + printed materials etc are done, etc. Accessories are done. Are they going to make all new boxes for hundreds of thousands of phones? Put a sticker on hundreds of thousands of boxes that says "Prime" instead of Nexus? Very unlikely.

>2. The phone was to be released before Thanksgiving, but software issues are holding it back.

Possible, but it's very hard to believe that they weren't aware of these software issues long before the original target launch date. How long ago did VZW get beta and alpha builds of ICS? All of a sudden the software didn't work? Seems a bit odd to me. If so, that's complete incompetence. And this is so hard to fix? Google + VZW working together at the highest levels can't solve this in a few days? Unbelievable. How important do you think this launch is to Google? I'm sure the executive order would have been issued long ago to solve it ASAP. This problem would not linger.

>3. Coming in March, unlimited data will be no longer grandfathered to those that upgrade their contract or make any plan changes.

Not surprising. It makes zero sense for VZW to be the only company offering unlimited.

Beyond that, look at the other phones that VZW has recently launched. The Bionic is a complete mess. Apps that go missing after install, major data dropouts, reboots etc. All of a sudden VZW has become a perfectionist for the GN? Doubt it.

The name has been changed to "Galaxy Prime". Verizon put 100 non-removable bloatware apps on it. The bootloader has been locked down like Fort Knox and Verizon will be pushing out the updates. One of the apps will upgrade our service plan upon first boot causing us to lose our unlimited data plans. These changes will be completed by December 8, but just to show us who's the boss, Verizon will release the phone December 31 at 11:59pm.

The information provided in this post is to be considered fact until proven otherwise (or someone asks for my source.)

Sauce?

Anyways, as much as I hate Verizon, they aren't insane. To release after Christmas would be to lose millions of dollars in revenue.

They already skipped all of Black Friday. They are already missing out on revenue.

They are also missing out on their exclusive on ICS. The more time they waste getting the GN out, the shorter the window before other carriers get phones with ICS.

They didn't release it on Black Friday which is traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year. So if they've lost any money as you seem to believe that has already taken place. Come December and especially mid December, many people have made their big purchases for the holidays already.

My understanding is that the last Saturday before Christmas (or so) has actually replaced Black Friday as the biggest shopping day of the year, at least from a revenue perspective. There may be more people in the stores on Black Friday, but they are not necessarily ringing up the cash registers at the same rate. By mid-December, all of us procrastinators out there have no other choice but to start buying. :)

December 8 is not too late for Verizon to cash in on the holiday season. December 21 probably would be, though. I strongly doubt that Verizon would release a new phone a couple days before Christmas.

My point exactly. All of the Galaxy S and S II phones all stated "a Galaxy S phone" or "a Galaxy S II phone after their name in ads. Wouldn't Nexus Prime "a Galaxy Nexus phone" be along the same lines? Are all of the carriers going to call it a Galaxy Nexus? I doubt it.

LOL You don;t remember the Droid Incredible/HTC Incredible do you? They changed the name after at or just after launch and those of us who pre-ordered or bought the first batch in stores got plain white boxes that lacked any Droid branding. They didn't bother repackaging till the second run of devices or so. Accessories sat in stores with HTC Incredible branding for months till they sold through and were replaced with packages with the new name. While I don't think this will be the case this time I wouldn't count it out.

No, I'm Android noob. They really did that? Wow.

As many phones as Verizon releases each year, you'd think it wouldn't be that difficult to get it right.

Back in the day the bb storm was sitting at vzw stores each store had to flash new software and install new device sticker on the retail box. No 2 phone launches are the same.

HTC Droid Incredible: Unboxing Photos before release

Take a look for yourself, that's the exact box I got when I opened mine the night before the store release (pre order), not a review unit.

They changed the name at the last minute, and didn't want to spend the time and money to re-box or re-label everything. While some of us were curious no one really cared because it was the phone we were interested in not the name or the box it came in.

Ugh...don't remind me. The morning of November 21st, 2008 was very cold.

I didn't see a DINC ad until two months after it came out.
