Leaving CDMA - Straight Talk or Simple Mobile?

I plan on doing the same thing, but leaving Verizon instead of Sprint. I ordered the ST MicroSIM card and one month of service with free shipping and no charge for the SIM using the promo code SIMSAVE. It arrived in only 2 days via FedEx. I am borrowing a friend's galaxy note to try it out this weekend, before I order the Nexus 4, to make sure coverage is manageable in my area.

Hey guys quick question, hopefully someone familiar can help me with this.

So just over a week ago I moved from Verizon to T-Mobile and got a Galaxy Note 2, thinking that the Nexus 4 wouldn't be my thing.

After some thought, I really want to (and am planning on) going with the Nexus 4 and the $30 prepaid plan (instead of a 2yr contract +$69 a month).

I live in California so the return period is 30 days, so I do have until a little past the Nexus 4 launch date to bring my Note 2 back and cancel everything.

I'm wondering if since I already have my number ported to T-Mobile, if it will make me unable to get the $30 a month prepaid plan? If it doesn't how would I go about it?

Do I cancel my service, and then activate the $30 a month plan afterwards? I'm worried that once I cancel, my phone number will disappear. Is this true? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Which Sim does the Nexus 4 take? Micro or Regular? Looking to buy the Nexus 4 and ST, and dump VZW. Can't find the info on the Play Store Devices page.
Thanks!

How do you guys find this $30 per month on TMo? I'm with Sprint and would love to get a deal like that! I'll jump ship from Sprint in a heartbeat!

Sent from my Photon 4G that Stupid Motorola will not upgrade to ICS or any other newer form of Android because they're a bunch of lying bastards (and deserve to go to hell!) using Android Central Forums

How ca you only use 100 minutes of talk time? or is there a way to get around it?

You can use grooveip or talk atone with Google talk for WiFi calling or you can pay for more minutes at 10c a min.

Some people don't voice chat but text ..(like myself)

My only question about this plan is do you need to buy a phone from T-Mobile to be able to get this plan? Under the plan on their site it says for new activations only..that's kinda vague IMO.

New activation's means you can not convert your existing T-Mobile plan, so if you purchase a Nexus device to use with the $30/mo plan you are good.
I have used the ST with AT&T and the $30 T-Mobile plan. I found ST with AT&T did provide better coverage, but I still used the wifi at home with GV to make VOIP phone calls, so found the T-Mobile plan more suitable for my purposes, even though like I said, the coverage with ST was better.
I have also played with different VOIP carriers including Skype, and VOX, as well as Groove-Voice. I tend to switch between VOX and GV most of the time, though I frequently also use Google Talk as well.
The 100 minute T-Mobile issue doesn't really matter since I only make calls via VOIP and wouldn't even know the phone's number if it wasn't for texting.

Just email Straight Talk support. When I asked about 4G on Straight Talk, they said their network is 3G only. They're pretty fast too.

No idea what that means.....But they use HSPA+ which I suppose you can call 3.5G or 4G or 3G. They don't go into labels of what its called, that's for T-Mo to use as a marketing strategy.

I've been on Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile prepaid in the past, on Solavei now and haven't regretted my choice at all.

If you are in an area with decent T-Mobile coverage I'd highly recommend it for a few reasons over the competition.
1. Support for conditional call forwarding (unlike most pre-paids you can actually use fully integrated Google Voice or Google Voice Lite)
2. Clearly defined data limit that's higher than most comparatively priced plans (4gigs before any throttling per TOS, I've yet to experience throttling though)
3. Current promotion offers free SIM for those bringing their own device and first month of service free (second month of service free if you have 3 friends sign up in addition to the 20 dollars a month you'll still get after that effectively making your bill only $30 a month for Unlimited Voice/Text/Data)
4. 'Social Membership' allows you offset your cellphone bill either in part or entirely. If you enjoy the service you can tell others and earn money. If you don't then it's a prepaid service with no contract so you can try another MVNO.

Side note: 'Social Membership' is optional.. if you don't want to tell other people about the service you don't have to, you can just enjoy the service at the already decent price.

Solavei (referral link)

If you don't live in an area with decent t-mobile coverage then Straight Talk with an AT&T SIM has worked mostly well for some of my friends (although at least on the Columbus Ohio area they seem to get throttled at limits that seem based more on which part of town they live on than strictly data usedOne friend hit 'cap' at 500mb while another was at 2.5gb and still not throttled)

How is the roaming on Solavei? Does it transfer easily to AT&T in rural areas or outside T-Mobile service areas?

Anyone know how ST AT&T does in Omaha, NE?

Straight Talk uses AT&T 3G, so you should be able to look at AT&T's coverage maps in Omaha for a good answer. Just be aware that anywhere AT&T says "Partner network", Straight Talk will say "NO SIGNAL". Straight Talk also has their own coverage maps on their page.

You can also use user-contributed maps from a project like Coverage Maps | Sensorly and look up actual user-collected data for AT&T GSM and that should give you some idea.

What are the effects on Google Voice integration if I port my number over from Sprint to either ST or T-Mobile prepaid? I use it for Voicemail and Text Messaging.

So if it says "No Signal", I won't actually get a signal?

Going by Straight Talk's maps, I should have coverage everywhere. However, I don't think that's true as AT&T has no presence in Eastern Iowa (around Vinton) and in Flagstaff, AZ which are two places I go to.

Also, I checked out OpenSignal - Crowd-sourced Cellular Coverage Maps for the world. which also says I should get signal. OpenSignal shows that AT&T has more towers and more coverage in Omaha than Sprint does and that Sprint has the worst coverage in the city, AT&T has 2nd best. This information doesn't take into account that AT&T added 4G towers here as well (which ST obviously can't pull from) so, unless AT&T removed some towers, then it should be better.

There are so many sites saying I should and shouldn't get signal, I'm starting to think it'd be best to just try the service anyway just to check.
