Leaving Sprint - on to Galaxy Nexus, Razr, or Bionic?

Hey all,

I have been with sprint for 10 years, and am ready to jump ship - I can't stand the 100kbps max that I am pulling near Detroit (on my NS4G).

My wife and I are looking to continue with high-end android devices (we have the NS4G and an Evo now). I was ready to just get 2 Bionics - but figured i would kick myself if the Galaxy Nexus came out in two weeks and I was already stuck with the Bionic (which has a less than impressive screen - being used to a SAMOLED).... Then I read about the interim Razr device.... that's nice - but the same scenario holds true - will I regret not waiting for the HD SAMOLED display of the GNex.

Any guidance? Thoughts?

Thanks a ton in advance,

Matt!

Screw anything Motorola until they start unlocking bootloaders. Nexus is THE phone to get, end of story.

I just checked out the bionic in-hand. Other than the display being sub-par, this phone is great. The Galaxy Nexus only has a 5MP camera, and the razr doesn't have a removeable battery - that's what I'm using to talk myself into the bionic.

The Bionic is a nice phone. I had it for two weeks and, probably would have kept it if not for the signal issues in my home. That gave me a excuse to return it and, wait on the phone I really wanted.

Matt!

First off.. congrats on leaving Sprint soon.. not a clue why people pay for data and phone service when they barely get coverage for either.

turb0wned,

Trust me, I understand.... But as I mentioned having .09 megabytes per second on my Sprint 4g phone is f*cking painful when the verizon phone next to me is getting 12 megs per second. Too little, too late for Sprint. I'll GLADLY pay $10 more for each additional gig, or move up to $50 for 5 GB if I have too. I'll rarely touch 2GB.... but to be able to have high speeds is worth the price difference...

Thanks,

I am in the same boat as you and been with Sprint for 13 yrs. My wife's Bionic and even her OG droid with gets speeds 5-10 times fast then mine (via Speedtest) when the phones were right next to each other. Sprint for the past few months has gotten so bad its painful. We just had a huge snow storm in NY and since my Sprint service has gotten even worse yet my wife's Bionic is flawless as was any phone on Verizon. Its pathetic because I can't even ask her if she is having bad service to compare or if its just Sprint because it is always Sprint, my wife has never had an issue with service and is spoiled with Verizon.

When I switch it won't be a big deal with price. Right now I pay $96/month and that's with all fees included, that's the unlimited plan with Sprint. When I go to Verizon I will add my line as a 2nd line and do the family unlimited talk/text plan. Her phone keeps the unlimited data and I will get the 2g ($30) and if need be add more but I am connected to Wifi 70% of the time. It will come out to $105 per phone. Right now her phone cost me $130 and mine $96 so I am actually saving by going to Verizon.

105 per phone seems kinda high.. do you guys use a ton of minutes?

my family plan is 2 phones, and its 172 after taxes and fees.

Is that the unlimited plan? That is the one we are getting unlimited calls/text which has a price of $149.00 for the 2 phones then add in $30 each for the data plan. Right now my wife is on the 900 min plus unlimted text and data which is at $116 before taxes/fees, comes out to $130.

No I have the 700 min unlimited data/text plan.. its not available anymore but I find we use a combined 500-600 mins every month so its been working perfectly.

Honestly your not going to go wrong with either of your choices... there is one big thing about the nexus/ics that can be a benifit though.. that new data usage app is far above what I've seen 3rd party apps offer and can help you avoid fees. Also ICS in its full form may not appear on Motorola products until leaked builds (from motor) come out. Even with access to the source. (There are required kernel changes that need to be made) The RAZR is Motorola's baby whereas the Bionic was Motorola's commitment, don't be surprised if official support for the Bionic dies off long before the RAZR.

You currently don't have bloatware and it may be the toughest thing to get used too. I used my mom and dads DX and DX2 and the lag that those things have is absurd.. don't let Motorola fool you, they will slow down ICS.

I can't run anything but AOSP now. I have a thunderbolt and I went back to sense to sell it and it rather use my Droid 1... my honest opinion is to get yourself a RAZR and your wife a Nexus. Play with them for a few days and use that 15 day period to test it. Trust me AOSP to Blur is a tough transition.

Thanks for that....

However, If I am looking to have a microSD, slot, a removeable battery, and an 8MP camera - NEITHER of the new phones (Razr, Nexus) satasfy those basic (IMHO) features, and the Bionic does....

That changes things a bit for me....

Thanks again,

Matt!

There is also the Rezound to round out the trifecta of devices coming to verizon this year, that has all of of these features and HTC has been pretty good about support as well

FYI,

I ported over painlessly from Sprint to Verizon today - went to Best Buy and got 2 new Bionics for less than $200 each (practically free, after i sell my current phones).

I am already over the 'screen door' effect that I see occasionally - the speed, functionality, and LTE of this phone are AMAZING! It's a great phone to welcome me to Verizon.....

So happy I could, um.... stuff....

Thanks for all of your help,

Matt!

P.S. The BestBuy rep advised that I have 30 days to exchange my phone for a different one.... SOOO, if the Rezound rears its shiny head, I may look into it - other than that, I'm good!

I realized that their is only 2 ways to go with smartphones... A Nexus or an Iphone. Nothing in between period.

I am at a loss. I looking to upgrade from my OG DROID. Its been two years and allot of finger nails lost over these phones popping out after the DROID ( the last phone you'll ever buy! ). I like the ics system, but i'm kinda disappointed with the line up. The GN looks great, but why does the Rezound have a bigger processor. The razor looks the coolest in eye appeal, but motorola has left a bad taste in my mouth with the DROID. Not to mention theres no flash on the friggen camera (whats that about?) and no possible way to remove the battery. To me that sounds like a customer has no choice but to upgrade in 2 years. The Rezound has most of the features i want, but no ICS!! and it looks thick as hell. Which i could get over the size. So my question is this. Would i be better of getting the Rezound and waiting for ICS or get the GN and deal with poorer quality photos?

The razr has a camera flash.

I went to a VZW store to get hands-on with the Razr. MUCH to my surprise, I found that the Bionic's screen was much brighter, more readable, and even had sharper text. The Razr had text that was outlined in a fuzzy prism halo effect.

Plus Amoled types of screens are hard to read in the sun... unless Pentile amoled screens are easier in the sun....
