Let's talk about MST - Magnetic Secure Transmission

Ok, all the talk about the missing removables is boring me to tears, so let's talk about the new feature instead. MST, the tech that allows the Galaxy S6 to interface with magnetic stripe readers. Personally I think this is the #1 new feature on the device. I'm wondering if it will work through cases though, and what the specific range is. Obviously it's "near field" but I don't know just how near.

Eventually Samsung is going to have to expand it beyond the S line, get it into the Active and the Note...if Samsung Pay picks up then they can sell MST modules to everyone else to increase acceptance and use of Samsung Pay, or keep Samsung Pay as a hook to get people to move to the various Samsung devices. I'm curious about which way they'll go actually, that may actually be a big decision for Samsung. Sell their secret sauce and make money off of Samsung Pay, or keep it as a hook to get people to buy Samsung over HTC, LG, and Moto?

not sure.

First, does sammy hold patent on this and can prevent others from getting in?

Two, with high profile breach recently, credit card is moving away from magnetic strips (my new freedom card now comes with chip and pin on top of the stripe), I am unsure the stripe have a bright future at this stage.

It's an interesting idea. Especially since NFC payments aren't widely accepted. Although that will begin to change now that Apple is on board with that, but it is still going to take time for merchants to adopt an NFC payment method.

As for the second part of your post, I think Samsung will try to keep it in house, to give incentive for people to stick with the Samsung line.

I totally agree. Let's talk about one of many improvements on the GS6. I think it's great that Samsung provided both. It proves their forward looking approach and gives them one more way to differentiate themselves. When both payment systems are online and prevalent, we won't have to buy a new device or wait for a firmware update. It's already there.

I disagree. People who are not technically savv will always want the comfort of throw back tech. Why do we still have SD cards when there is cloud storage and data streaming? Why do we have swappable batteries when tightening up the OS and having more energy efficient, high output/faster chipsets?

I'm kinda thinking that too...I've noticed Exynos is primarily used internally, they don't sell that many of them to other companies. But that is going to limit the growth of SamsungPay to whatever market share Samsung has at the time. I have a feeling that's something they're going to be examining as time goes on. But I do look forward to seeing the technology in the Galaxy S6 Active and the Galaxy Note 5.

Really? You just HAD to mention those two items in my nice clean thread? Really?

I'm not certain I'd use the feature anyway - I guess I don't trust the security yet.

i will ignore the dead horse and focus on the topic.

Its not up to us to agree or disagree. Magnetic strip has security problem and it led to quite a few high profile problems.

It doesn't matter if some people likes to "throw back", its about what is happening already.

Now, s6 may not last that long before magnetic stripe goes away completely. But if samsung want to bank on magnetic stripe for decades to come, that may be a wrong horse to bet on.

Leave the gun. Take the canoli.

We still RW CD storage. Still use DVD for watching at home. There are still people who want a paper boarding pass instead of using their phone. MST may not last long but it should last long enough for Samsung to introduce another mobile payment system in future iterations of the Galaxy line.

Well they bought Loop Pay to get this technology and I'm guessing/hoping that they're working on a way to make it work with chip and pin tech. From what I understand though, they're using a one time token for each transaction so even if someone stole the signal being transmitted by your phone they wouldn't have your card number, and also wouldn't be able to use it to make another purchase. Sounds pretty secure to me. I'll be using this as soon as it's available. It'll be nice not to have to carry my wallet around anymore.

I'm afraid you're wrong about that, there's too much invested in mag stripe technology for it to go away within the next 2 years. Way too many POS systems, including 100% of the ones running on tablets are not and will not be NFC compatible. And too many small businesses simply aren't about to go buy NFC readers right now, especially when it involves a complete POS system replacement.

it does seems impossible, doesn't it? But I have learned not to underestimate the pace of changes. Fundamentally, its a security issue, if Wollymart and McDonald jump in, this thing can get changed real fast.

I agree, 2 years is probably too soon for magnetic stripe to die out, although I bet both chip and pin and magnetic stripe will be present on a card by then, and we will go from there.

One of the things my business unit does is provide POS systems and integrate with existing ones. Everything we're selling is mag-stripe, we don't even have APIs for NFC or chip-and-pin available to develop against yet.

Until your new credit cards come with a chip only and no mag stripe Samsung is going to enjoy it's lead getting in on old and new tech.

that does come back to my first question, does sammy have a patent on this?

I agree. I can never count on Google Wallet to pay for anything because most places don't have NFC pay and the ones that do, maybe 50% of them work or accept GW. Seems like with this tech, any place that has a CC swipe will accept my phone payment.

As for security, not sure why people are worried about that. The 'security breaches' had nothing to do with the card swipe tech, the stores' systems got hacked to get the numbers. And with MST, just like GW and Apple Pay, it hides your real card numbers so if a hack happened again, you wouldn't be breached.

And you guys reeeeeally think that CC swipe tech will be gone anytime soon? No, chip and pin is not taking over in the US. It's starting to come around at places that are upgrading their pay terminals, but that doesn't happen very fast. I have one card with CnP, and only because the card is made for overseas travel. Apple Pay was introduced months ago and I don't think I've seen any retailers advertising their new NFC terminals.

I say Samsung was genius to buy up Loop Pay and integrate it into the S6. I think it'll be very popular and revolutionize phone payment.

I don't know which platform is going to become universal in the end but I can't wait for the day where my wallet is a thing of the past. I got rid of the watch, next the wallet, then the phone (implantable technology) but I'll be dead before that happens.
