LG G3 Desperate need of a good keyboard

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

You can have both, no need to be rooted. The Android L keyboard is just another third party kb. I I've got them installed.

The L is quite good but I just went back to SwiftKey because I think it's the best when using different languages.

Tell me how you were able to install it then. When I try to install the Android L keyboard APK it tells me that I cannot because it's not able to overwrite the signature of Google Keyboard which is a system app on the G3.

You may have been able to update to the L keyboard while it was available on the Play Store, but you cannot do it now from the APK posted here:

[APP][4.0+] Android L (5.0) - Launcher, Apps, Keyboard APK, Wallpapers, Fonts, System - Post #0 - XDA Forums

Maybe you are using a different third party android L keyboard. The one in the link is an official update from Google Play that adds a material skin to the official Google Keyboard. If the Google Keyboard is a system app on your phone it will not work.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

That's right. I installed the L keyboard from the Play Store.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

I did a little search and you are right, again. You MUST uninstall Google keyboard if you want to install the L kb APK, now that is not anymore in the play store. For some devices you need root access to do that. My bad. 😑

Hah, no worries. I missed the chance at the L style Google Keyboard when it was up on the Play Store, and now I can't get it since I'm not rooted. I'm not really interested in rooting my phone, so it is what it is. I'm sure with all of the material style updates coming it won't take long until we see the L style keyboard on the Play Store again anyways.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

Not trying to criticize or make fun of anyone, but if millions of people can type just fine on multiple Android keyboards, it really seems unlikely that the software is an issue. It seems much more likely that s/he needs to adapt to the way Android does things. As post 13 suggests, muscle memory may need to be unlearned and relearned.

Okay, Steve Jobs. Everyone is different. Isn't choice one of the oft-touted strengths of Android? There are a lot of keyboard options out there that do not require people to unlearn or adapt. Like I mentioned about, I dislike the google keyboard but find Fleksy to be very easy to use. Works great for me, no need to adapt to a single way of doing things.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

You insist on missing the point of what I said. That's fine. As you say, it's good to have choice, including the choice to misunderstand what other people are saying.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

I think your original point was that the vast majority of people don't seem to have problems tap-typing on multiple kinds of keyboards, so therefore it is likely a problem with the OP's technique. I can see where the OP is coming from, though--I've found on various different keyboards that if I try to tap-type, I'll hit the wrong keys relatively often, by virtue of the fact that most keyboards in portrait mode have fairly narrow keys, and my fingers aren't exactly slender. Landscape keyboards are much easier to type on, but that severely limits what you can see on the screen.

This usually doesn't end up being an issue for me, because I prefer swype/gesture typing. But I would guess that more than a few people experience the same issues, and just don't bother to complain about it, because they feel that it's the keyboard they're stuck with.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

I'm trying the ai.type keyboard. It has a 14 day free trial and the full version is around $4.00. It has a free Android L add on from the Play store which I'm using. I'm rooted, but the app info on the Play Store says nothing about root being required. Great Keyboard so far, I'm likely to drop the $3.99 on the plus version.

I just use the stock google keyboard. Its really smooth and i just prefer it over any other keyboard

I'm not the only one who is missing your point, apparently. See the b.diddy's post directly below yours. If multiple people are "missing your point," perhaps your point is unclear and needs clarification.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

Hey folks, let's stay on point here and continue with suggestions to the OP for alternate keyboards. Thanks!:)

I hadn't heard of this one, but I am now also giving this a whirl. I like the free version so far, it has a lot of customization options I like that others I've tried do not like adjusting various key rows and changing fonts. Pretty cool keyboard, and having the Android L theme that almost looks identical to the actual L version is a bonus. I might also shell out the 4 bucks after the trial period.

Re: Desperate need of a good keyboard

I found the G3 the toughest phone to type on that I've ever used. I go through a lot of phones, mostly Android but Windows and iPhone as well. What helped me was to remove the tempered glass screen protector. Still not as good as other phones for accuracy but it helped.
