LG G4: Auto-Auto-Auto Photo Challenge

First time out for me, so not sure how the camera meters yet...do you tap an area to set the exposure in Auto Mode? Thought the G4 Auto Mode did all adjustments without user input, but then I am new to all this. To me, the first, out of the camera needed a little more contrast/saturation/sharpening, Photoshop tweaked it n the right direction. Going to take The Beast for her walk and try to get more outdoor shots. Pretty overcast today so will expect the sky to be pretty white.

If you're in auto mode, the camera tries its darndest to do everything for you... and that's what I wanted to see in this challenge. However, obviously that doesn't work in all circumstances.

In auto mode, you can either let it choose the focus/exposure area (you'll see several little green squares) or you can tap on the screen to choose such an area. So if you were to tap on the sky, the phone will focus on that area and also set the exposure based on the sky.

When the HDR kicks in it can help out exposure, but it can actually end up "flattening" out the contrast sometimes in its effort to add / take away bad exposure.

For contrast / saturation, I'm of the opinion that it does better when there's not too many odd lighted areas to deal with, and even the HDR doesn't make it right.

Also, for adjusting your photos afterwards, I have the full Adobe CC suite at home... but I'm quite enjoying Snapseed on my phone. It does an amazing job, but the UI takes getting used to, particularly the fact that up/down/left/right gestures are what allow you to manage different settings.

Looking forward to getting the hang of it. Being able to spot focus/meter in Auto seems like a requirement, but wasn't sure it did that.

Wow. I am guessing you are pretty happy with the camera. ;)

So far, so good...gotta get the Spot Metering down a little better. The first photo of my dog really blew out the wall above my safe, which wasn't that bright, but maybe that's the nature of the beast. From what I've read, the hardware in the camera is good, so maybe the software updates will improve the highlights as the G4 matures. I know there are a lot of apps that will be able to do great things too, as you guys have mentioned a couple of.

Also just a side note ... I believe some of the photos can lose some quality depending on how it was uploaded. Such as I used the app and I believe it has been reduced.

I found it strange that the dedicated android app of an android site reduced the resolution of the photo to 1/4 of the ones uploaded from a PC! I have been reading people's comments on the Pictures thread saying to get the best attachment, they will have to wait until they get back to their home computer to do the upload. That just seem anti Androidish...

The app is based off of Tapatalk so I believe it is more of a Tapatalk thing than an Android Central thing.

I looked at every setting, and looks like no dedicated Macro...does getting really close work in Auto work as well as Manual
a Macro mode?

In either manual or auto mode you can get as close as 1 inch and still focus; in manual mode it's easier to actually achieve the 1 inch focus using the manual focus.

Are we just pointing and shooting quickly or pointing and letting the camera focus on its own?? I know you guys stated not to manually focus by pressing on the screen (which I ALWAYS do!) so I just wanted to be sure how we're going about this.

For my challenge (you're welcome to do whatever you like!) I'm doing just point & shoot, letting the camera focus on its own. It's more of a test of the camera's capability than a test of your photographic prowess ;)

Ah ok....this will be interesting, lol 😄

Waiting impatiently for my train to get here!!!!!!! 😡😡😡

Trains! I have never been on one. We don't have them regularly around here in Jacksonville haha.

Well you don't want to be on a train during rush hour. It's ridiculously crowded! I'll gladly trade places with you, lol!

Handled the sky pretty well without making the wall or shutters too drk ;-).

Yes, aside from not seeing the really sky colour (which really wasn't much to look at), the full auto, point and shoot, method actually did a pretty good job of a difficult light situation.
