Hi guys!
For all of you who are already using G4 and all other tech guys, I just want your opinion regarding the G4 first time battery charging.
So do you:
1. Use the battery straight out of the box until it drains completely out and then charge the phone for 8 hours? or
2. Put it directly on the charger, without using it at all, for 8 hours and then use the G4.
You see, tomorrow is my big day...I am getting the G4 brown leather and I really do not want to mess around with its first battery charging....having in mind all these battery issues around.
I would really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!!!

I don't even know if it's still necessary to do this, but this is how I do it with all of my new phones: I use the battery charge it came with until it reaches about 10%. I charge it all of the way, using it very sparingly if possible while it's charging. Then I drain it all the way back down until about 10%, and charge fully again. After that, I top off when needed. I got the phone last night and it seemed to drain VERY quickly while I was setting everything up, but I'm sure that was because I was downloading apps and had the screen on a lot. Plus I didn't find the battery saving mode until it was about out of juice. As of now, it's at 10 hr 50 minutes on battery, with 1 hr 38 minutes screen on time, and it's at 63%.

I typically try to stay out of the battery debates these days, but, I guess I'll jump in on this one.

You'll be fine either way you do it; I believe most people just plug it in to full when they receive the device.

Lithium-ion batteries like the ones in our phones do not need to be "cycled" to "remember" their charges like our old cellphones used to, contrary to what many people say. Some studies have even shown that it gradually harms the battery to do so. Again, you'll surely find people in this thread who disagree, and others who do agree; it's a giant debate every single time a new phone is released.

How to prolong lithium-based batteries.

The point is to just enjoy your device and not worry about its hardware too much unless something is on fire or exploding. :-)

You don't need to charge it for 8 hours. I'd use it to set everything up, then I'd plug it in until fully charged. After that I'd charge it before gets below 40%.

Well, that's a very interesting article....Thank you sooo much!!

Not to hijack but since the op mentioned 8 hour charging, did anybody else's first g4 charge take a loooonnnnng time? Mine was on the charger for over 4 hours before fully charging. Had me a little worried until 2nd charge seemed more normal.

Mine did take a long time to charge also...granted I was doing a lot of app installs and restoring backups but it was very very slow.... First charge battery started at 49% and it probably took 5-6 hours to get to 100%. New charges since have been much faster.

I haven't timed mine yet or used any battery testing apps but I can confirm that my charging seemed slow, incredibly slow, due to the AT&T Messages Backup & Sync restoring 2+ years of texts from Sunday afternoon, when I bought the phone, until midday yesterday. Now the charging on my G4 seems pretty normal and fast enough. That said, I *will* be investing in a spare battery and perhaps a 2.0 charger before going to Dragon Con next week.
