LG G4 H815 Android Marshmallow update rollout and initial impressions

The update is staggered. It will arrive when it hits your model in your region.

It must be staggered in Europe too, because I have a non-branded unlocked European variant and no update is showing up neither OTA nor through LG Bridge.

I didn't find :
"To ensure that notifications are received from certain apps go to Settings > Battery & Power Saving > Battery Usage > Ignore Optimizations"
but under
Settings > Apps > Configure Apps > Ignore optimizations.

takes you to the same place.

Unable to store Spotify tracks on the SD card like I used to on Lollipop. I've read some devices allow you to setup the internal and external storage as one integrated memory area, but many have warned against this. LG appear to have heeded this and only allow you to define an SD card as Portable memory.
I'm brand new to Android, but having rooted my device and installed MM 20B on my G4, I'm very pleased with the stability and general speed of my phone.

Can you explain what Allow Peeking does a little more? Does that just mean that it will briefly show the white bar at the top of the screen when you get a notification (like it already does with messenger or hangouts)? Or is there another functionality? I know the other two options are already available in Lollipop as pictured in my screen grab.

Also, I noticed the lack of Quick Toggles in the screen grab with the notification shade pulled down. Do they still show by default when pulling down the notification shade, or is it a second swipe down to access now?

Now hopefully the carriers wont disable half of this cool stuff to either replace with their own crapps or just never to be seen again.

I surely hope they are still there as I abhor the two staged swipe. I makes no sense.

They show up for me even with one swipe.

They're still pretty big, though.

Well that's a relief. For a moment I feared someone at LG went and listened to Jerry :P
Though yeah, I do agree they're probably a bit oversized. On the other hand though, by being that big, they make it easier to hit them with just one hand. Sometimes I just wished Google would just copy Apple and move those quick toggles to a bottom swipe from the screen instead of just having Google Now open that way. With screens becoming more dinner trays than phones, it's high time the UIs get redesigned.

A few more impressions.

Performance has definitely improved. Everything feels snappier, animations are smoother and less jaggy and there are less stutters as well.

Let's address the elephant in the room; the touchscreen.

For those who don't know, the G4 in its early days on the market was plagued with a not-so-responsive touchscreen.

With the current update, the touchscreen response is much improved.

I must say, I liked HTC's quick toggle function. A single swipe down only showed your notices. A second swipe would bring down the toggles, but better yet, a two finger single swipe down takes you directly to the toggles. I found that by showing everything at once by default like on the G4, notices stack up and I'm forced to then swipe back up (just enough to remove the toggles, not the entire shade) so I can see and respond to the notices easily. Not a deal breaker, but still a step backwards compared to what I was used to on my M8.

I also don't want anything activating with a swipe up from the bottom. I flat deactivated the Google app because it kept interfering with games when I tap/swipe up near the bottom while in full screen mode. I'll be playing along fine, then I'll need to do something in that area. Next thing I know, the game pauses and that Google display pops up. At least the G4 works great in this area by having a separate voice dial app. My M8 didn't have its own voice dialing app and relied on Google for that function. So for hands free voice dialing, I had to leave the Google app enabled and just deal with the unintended Google swipe up actions.

Here's a bug that should be easy to test for by polyglot users of the H815: after the upgrade to Marshmallow, the phone doesn't keep my language preferences across reboots.

Say, I have set the display language to English (US) but the SIM card is from a French carrier. Now, every time I reboot, I am greeted with a device decryption challenge and UX in French - I have to switch it back over to English in Preferences. Does anyone else see this?

One thing on doze. Is it not supposed to come already enabled and if not, how do I enable it?

My phone is sitting on my desk for the past 20 minutes and I've just got a hangouts and whatsapp message come in on it. I thought these would be 'dozing' while I had the phone set down?

I am having a great experience using Marshmallow but there are many new things which i was not aware about earlier and got to know from a post.
Enjoy this now version of Android and hope we get something better than marshmallow in future.

20 minutes is too soon for Doze to be activated.

Doze is automatically activated after a certain period of time when the phone is left lying on a surface and unused. Typically takes around 40-60 minutes to activate.

this is great news! nothing OTA yet (USA) but i'll check the bridge later tonight. cant from my work comp lol
