BUT the main reason I switched was to join the rest of the sheep. Why? Because I was tired of walking into a store never finding any accessories if I didn't feel like waiting for something online. It is nice to see a wide selection of toys now that I am with the rest of herd.
Sad that this is the reason. But it was what swayed me in the end.
My "accessories" story - my first smartphone was the LG Optimus G. At the time I was shopping, the Samsung GS3 was the big thing, advertised heavily, and I loved the red color option... but the advertising and fluff did not sway me; I didn't like the plastic-y feel and it cost a bit more (this was still the time of carrier subsidies). I made a pretty objective decision, and I was quite happy with the LGOG.
But then came the offer I couldn't refuse... a free GS5. I have to admit, the flood of available accessories (including evaluation units) was a nice change. I would never have bought that phone, and I never loved the ugly beast, but it was nice to have the latest & greatest, for a while at least.
2+ years later and it's becoming unreliable and I'm starting to look into replacements. The G6 looked really good to me, but the GS8 was sexier (really liked the orchid gray). Of course, I was not planning on spending flagship money, so I was watching and waiting for either a great deal or a great mid-range alternative. As it turns out, my wife decreed that I was getting a new phone for fathers' day, and that was that. I had almost bitten on the $300 trade-in Samsung had on the unlocked GS8 but held off because only the black color was available.
As it turned out, AT&T had just started their rather quiet 50% off promotion on the G6 and that was enough to overcome the sexiness of the GS8 and any of the reservations I had over the G6 (worse color choices, LCD screen, smaller capacity).
This was an AT&T authorized retailer, and while the big giant posters were all GS8 and iPhone, the G6 itself was at least prominently positioned right next to the GS8, and the employees really did not push one over the other. So it seems that while LG may not be marketing much, AT&T is at least trying to boost sales.
It really seems that since the GS3 at least, Samsung has been into gimmicks more than anything. But gimmicks do sell. To me, the idea of Bixby is an atrocity, so I don't know if it is much of a selling point - but the orchid gray color certainly is, and facial recognition is, and the sexy curves are - none of which are really functionally important. The high screen-to-body ratio, wireless charging, IP68, quick charging, those are useful features that both phones have.
