Dog got hold of my phone and there are a couple of nasty teeth marks in the notification bar area of the screen, everything else seems to work fine though. But the notification area is completely dead to the touch so I can't slide it down. Any other ways to open the notification bar? I'd really like to assign one of the side buttons to the bar as I never use them.

Oh no! Those darned dogs... did you have a screen protector?

if you are using the stock launcher, then press the menu button. one of the 6 options is 'notifications'

Hey, check out the link in my signature, you can map any hardware key you want to call notifications, sorry to hear about your phone.

Thanks guys, the stock menu button > notifications is sufficient for right now. I may try following your guide sometime later sblood, my phones not rooted yet and I'm far to lazy to jack with it.

Oh yeah fair enough, for some reason it didn't occur to me you may not have root lol, glad you found a solution though

adw ex allows you to control swipe gestures. Settings can be altered from the app to show or hide the status bar by swiping up. Launcher Pro might do the same, not 100% sure.

Go Launcher also lets you set gestures for the Dock and the entire screen. My setup displays the notifications when I swipe down anywhere on the home screen, I don't have to actually swipe on the notification bar.
