So the overall impression is that it's a good OV replacement for VM or for those that haven't gotten the OV/are looking to upgrade but don't want the OB or the OB doesn't come to VM any time soon.

Looks like not a bad phone, and if I didn't have the OV I probably would go for it.

Oh...my...gosh. This is great news. I love the Optimus V to pieces but the lack of physical keyboard is just darn terrible for my big thumbs. I will have to test this out in store though to see if the keyboard is a good size though. From the pictures on Best Buy, it looks a bit cramped which I'm worried about with my big thumbs. A bigger processor though would be great to have so this phone could be a good upgrade to from the Optimus V. Will have to see it in person.

Does anybody know if this is out on display yet at a Best Buy or Radio Shack, or even a Target?

Not on display yet, because its not actually released yet. Best Buy just jumped the gun by posting that.

Ah, alright. Was just curious because on page 2 somebody showed a picture of the phone being $179.99 and thought it was on display already or something. I can't wait to see this phone in person. Hope it meets my expectations.

It's not an OV replacement, if anything it's an Intercept replacement.
The Black is technically going to be the OV replacement.

I think Virgin would be stupid to drop the OV and I doubt they will, it still is an awesome phone for the money, and if they drop it's price, keep the Triumph, and slide the OB in the middle, they will have a real nice selection of Androids, with one being a darn nice phone at a killer price (the OV). The OV may be a bit long in the tooth, but it still works well as a cheap Android phone. Can anyone really argue with a $100 OV? I can think of quite a few uses for one without it being used as a phone even (low power server, mp3 player, portable game player...). It may not do any of these particularly well, but for the power, portability and price, try and beat it.

The same applies to the Intercept, why drop it when this comes out. So long as sales remain decent, drop the price, it just gives customers more options. Again, can you really complain about an Intercept for $100? Find another keyboard Android for that.

True, I probably should have written my words better. In my opinion, besides for the keyboard, this is like the optimus v 2.0. Lol but yes I agree if anything the optimus slider will replace the intercept, at least where it stands now. I don't think they should drop it as they're one of the first prepaid carriers to offer decent quality Android phones, and having more of a selection can't be that much of a bad thing

More products mean more items to keep in inventory, so there are some downsides, but if they separate the prices enough, I'm sure they can move more than enough Intercepts to make it worthwhile.

Unfortunately, there is a chance they won't put out an Android that cheap simply because they could syphon off post-paid users. I think Sprint is trying to walk a fine line between the two.

I'm almost starting to wonder why they bother.
Post and Pre paid are merging very quickly, look at Simple Mobile and Page Plus. Charge me $10 more a month for roaming or the ability to bring our own phones (or just get better phones period, which is sort of happening), I would do it in a heartbeat*. Simple Mobile would be more tempting if the T-Mobile AT&T merger wasn't looming over their head (now if Sprint bought T-Mobile, we would be talking!). We pay up front, why can't we get a better deal and better phones than we do. Pre-paid is no longer just people who don't have the credit for post-paid.

*No, I do not consider the Triumph a better phone, but they are giving us the Slider and OB.

I agree with your statement about pre-paid not being just for people who don't have the credit for post-paid.

I particularly chose VM because of the fact that I don't like going into contracts. I'm 22, a college student, and I've held more jobs in the past year that I can count on one hand. My income isn't exactly "stable" so I much prefer knowing that if I can't pay my bill, it just gets shut off instead of getting a penalty.

But yes we should be able to get a better deal and better phones

Totally a replacement for the Intercept - I'm stoked. It will be neat to have a phone with a keyboard again because I like to do coding, etc. from my phone, but with the on screen it is so cumbersome.

It seems Best Buy has taken down that page for the Optimus Slider. Which makes me wonder if they were forced to take it down or they just thought it was too early to advertise it. Either way I hope it's back up soon. :(

I have great credit and a steady job (my horn says toot toot) and i just switched from verizon a few months back for price and flexibility. i was fed up with a $180 cell bill for myself and my wife. we jumped just before the increase so our bill is now $80. we both still have android phones and unlimited data. Not sure why i waited as long as i did. I am ashamed that i bought into that bill of goods about vzw being SO much better than the other carriers. They are the Oakley of cell providers - a mediocre product with a premium price thanks to marketing.

Why do we always feel the need to call frugal people cheap or just say they cant afford good things. i am rich by no means, but i can afford verizon, hell i did for years, but now my eyes are open to the money i was wasting there and so many other places. If this makes me cheap then so be it.

to the college student above - you are wiser tham your years. while most people your age are racking up the debt , you realize that if you do not have the money for something you should drop it.

and in this same line of thought, bringing it back to the OP, as much as i want a KB the slider is not enough of a leap in my mind to merit the money. this is even more true for me as my OV is only a few months old.

/rant and i love this forum

What, no 3 month delay?!? That's pretty cool...wish it didn't cost $200 though. I know the Slider has a slightly faster CPU and comes with Gingerbread, but, as has been pointed out previously in this thread, a custom ROM on the OV can get you the same speed, or better, as well as Gingerbread. If you consider that the OV was just on sale for $99, and may be again, $100 seems like quite a premium to pay for a keyboard. (Or even ~$50 more for the keyboard if the OV is at is regular price of $149.)

I'm still waiting for the Optimus Black to be available on Virgin Mobile - it can be hoped that at that point, the prices for the OV and the Slider will be reduced. That is probably a few months away, though... :(

Yes, you can achieve the 'same speed' on the OV, however, this does have a 200mhz faster base speed, so logic dictates with an overclock if I can get my OV to 800mhz stable, I can probably get the Slider up to 1ghz. I know that my next phone has to have a keyboard, I've given touch typing and swyping plenty of time and chances and I just don't like it. It's the only problem I have with my OV is having to correct literally almost every word swyping and the constant fighting with typing on a flat surface.

Edit -- the Slider has a 600mhz as well? I thought it was 800. Virgin's press release doesn't list those specs for the Slider. Anyone have any insight on this?

I just think with the Optimus V currently being on sale for under 100 bucks, that neither of these phones seems really appealing at twice the price. Not unless you NEED a physical keyboard, and in that case, your prayers have been answered in the Slider.

Another thing I feel, is now that these have been announced at $199 each, the chance of an Optimus Black appearing at $249 is unlikely. I think that'll debut right where the Triumph did at $299.

I'll be curious to see the reviews once these phones are released.

The slider has a 600MHz processor as well? Well that's a downfall but hey, it's overclock-able so no problems. I love the fact it has a 5 megapixel camera AND flash! Something the V lacked which would have made it great. I will for sure be picking this phone up to upgrade from the Optimus V.
