Lg v20 vs. Note 7, got both, let's compare!

I went back and checked out the AT&T variant again today for a good while, it is definitely a solid and snappy phone. Got used to the display, and I'm pretty impressed with the speed and fluidity of Nougat. Split screen isn't a necessity for me, but would be awesome while searching for attachment files/pictures etc. Only thing I haven't had the chance to try yet is audio, but I don't doubt that it will be great.

My friend that works at that particular store told me if I want to try it out for 14 days, he can switch the IMEI to work on my primary number, and since it involved the N7 and they're "all for customer safety," he could get the $45 restocking fee waived if I decide I don't like it. On top of that, he could activate one of the lines as a tablet (I guess it would work the same as a regular mobile line???) so it would only be an additional $10 instead of $20. Think I'm sold, I'll be back tomorrow afternoon to pick one up!

Manual camera options are dope! The pro settings on my N7 are great, but these seem more user friendly and, eh, successful at what they accomplish? Looking forward to some real world hands on time with it

Please let us know about your experiences with the camera. I'm not at all good with photography, and therefore can't really put those manual controls to any kind of a meaningful test...

I checked out the V20 at my local AT&T store the other day when I went in to get my new OP3 setup on the network. I was very favorably impressed with the V20. I dismissed it early on because of lengthy software update cycles and the sorry record of bootloops over multiple devices.

But I have to say that the V20 definitely interests me should my OP3 not make the grade.

Strong pros for me:
1) removable battery
2) IR blaster
3) non edge display
4) screen size

Cons for me:
1) lingering bootloop concerns
2) fragile camera glass
3) OS and security update cycle times

Bottom line: there is no perfect phone (for me) in 2016.

I haven't had an LG smartphone ever, but did have multiple LG feature phones in the past that I really liked. I have been a Samsung fan, until they lost me with the iPhone look-a-likes that started with the sealed glass S6 phones. But Samsung has also had issues supporting flagship phones down the road too. My GS4 became an orphan long before it should have. Which is one reason I strongly considered making the move to the iPhone this year (but I just couldn't do it).

Maybe the OP3 will save the day for me. ;)

So you're keeping the Note 7 for better or for worse.....

Not saying that yet...
  1. I don't believe my phone has a problem; if I could make myself believe that, this wouldn't be a difficult choice for me.
  2. The S-pen is well... just the S-pen. *IF* the v20 had an S-pen, I would go return the Note 7. Even playing around trying to setup the v20, I needed a stylus for accuracy and speed. (bought a Stilo - works great actually, but won't attach to the phone). I needed to write on my screenshots... v20 can't do that. And to add insult to injury, LG makes a Stylo... a low end phone... with a stylus! WHY, LG, why didn't you put your stylus on your flagship???
  3. The waterproofing is hard to give up. I work on a river / very humid environment. Trying to make sure I don't get my phone wet is harder than keeping an eye on it. LG has released the v34, a smaller, waterproof version! Why does the US not get the same choice??? Japan-exclusive LG V34 is a 5.2" waterproof version of the V20 - GSMArena.com news
  4. I don't have children at home.
  5. I don't fly or otherwise use public transportation.
  6. I really prefer the Edge screen over the 2nd display on the v20. The first reason is that the edge screen doesn't take up any screen real estate when you're not using it. Less swiping than with the 2nd display on the v20. Full size icons on the Sammy Edge screen. You know, at first, thought the Edge screen was just a gimmick, but man! really use it a lot! Miss that.
So, right now... I don't know yet. the v20 IS growing on me.

I'm by no means a pro but I have a decent understanding of how to manipulate the controls to get the photos I want in the environment I'm in at that time. Point and shoot is just that, point and shoot. I think auto mode is going to be minimally different regardless of the device I'm using, although I have to say the panoramic photos I've taken on the N7 are absolutely stunning and the V20 seems good, but it has troubles sticking it together. The live option on panoramas is awesome on the N7 too, I wasn't even aware it existed until after a month or so of having the phone. The ability to adjust shutter speed is what I'm really excited about trying on the V20

Why? Watches do it.

I don't know why. I have never designed a phone, there must be some reason because you don't see it for phones very often, I am sure it is done. If it was a simple as adding an o-ring I would think more would be doing it.

I don't think the open back is the biggest issue. It is the buttons and usb opening and headphone jack and the speaker and microphone opening. All must be waterproofed. I really don't think the mechanism to open the back for the battery is the problem. I know the speaker of the Note 7 sounds terrible.

Watches use screw down crowns and backs. It would be quite a feat to make a screw down back for a phone, I think.
Some do. Some have little screws and an oring. Once you open them waterproof guarantee is void though. I'm not an engineer but I doubt water resistance depends on a sealed battery. I keep phones forever and use them on wifi so I like being able to easily replace the battery but I wouldn't carry one for a quick switch. Many people do enjoy that but not I.

Ok so far I am ok with the LG V20....but. No secret files, No Heart rate monitor (an app can fix that I guess) I love S health, I miss Amazon Kindle for Samsung 1 free book per month, I miss Samsung pay (but I can live without it), yesterday it started to rain I miss waterproof (but I can live without it), I miss Samsung Notes.... Grace UI is the best, I also had no issues with Touch Wiz. I can't stand LG's UI but that can be changed as well. And those emoticons are hideous on LG.
Love the snappiness of LG, the external speakers are great and better than the Note, fingerprint scanner is snappier than any Note I have owned, camera is a tad bit better than the Note if you can be patient and work Manual mode. Battery life seems about the same for both. Fast charging is lightening fast on LG, I mean like wow fast.

Cons for others but are actually pros for me...
I love the saturation screen on the N7, I have been unable to find the exact colors for the LG that I feel comfortable with I have probably changed it a gazillion times between yesterday and today.
I miss all of Sammy's bloatware....lol. Makes me feel I would never love stock Android or the Google Pixel. And let's not forget the Spen.
Overall, one can live with the LGV20 but it seems that it's missing soo much. Maybe I am just a Sammy fan.....I have both phones but I am forcing myself to not make the switch back to the N7. I think had they given me the LGV20 coming from the N5 and not ever knowing the N7 existed, it would've been a perfect switch.

The Note 7 was a great device that appears to have been made just a little too thin for its own good. Probably half a MM more thickness and no random battery shorts.

I've hardly had mine all but a couple hours but having both side by side (as I type on my note and the v20 is synching data from cloud backups) I'm still trying to convince myself that the N7 is probably just going to have to go back sooner than later. Having had it for 2 months now, it definitely is not the same but there are some really great perks to the V20. Although it's minimally larger, I do have to get used to the increase in size... I'll get there. Already have switched my SIM and am going to make it my primary device as long as I can to see if I can live with it.

Even the rep at AT&T that helped me today said if he were in my shoes, he would keep the N7 and just buy a cheap backup device in case of failure or the event that I travel and can't bring it with me. Having a store representative tell me that makes it even harder to give it up "
*sheds tear*

I'm not giving it up just yet....when they brick it or if they do that 60% battery charge or if they start charging me for the phone....then I will....lol. In the meantime I will stay between the 2. I'm not about to fly anytime soon. So remains to be seen what will make me give up the N7. I do like the LG V20 I just prefer all the features of the N7. And I feel the price tag was more justified on the N7 than the LG V20.

I'm with you on the note 7 being hard to replace with any phone, and I too prefer TouchWiz and the screen is awesome, but I'm going to try and hold on to the v20 til the note 8 comes out hopefully.

People always get on Samsung for lagging, but I have experienced lag with this v20 also.

No lag here

Look I feel the Note 7 was a great experience as well. I also realize any phone could catch on fire at any time, however it is just not smart to tempt fate. It is an odds game and if the stories are true odds are greater with the Note 7 that something bad could possibly happen. Form factor, s-pen, waterproofing, vibrant screen are not worth it. I think it is irresponsible to possibly put innocent people at risk because you want to hang on to some features.

Sorry you feel this way, but this is not a discussion of whether or not some people are going to keep the N7 or not. That discussion is absolutely moot at this point for some us. And I won't engage in that battle. This was just a comparison of the 2 as the OP requested.
