lgMobile Update can't connect to phone

I just got my LG Optimus V and activated it etc. This is my first 'smart phone'
I am now trying to run LGMovile Update tool, but it says it can't connect to my phone.
I rant the "install USB drivers" and it said it successfully installed. Tried rebooting my pc, phone etc but still nothing.

If I plug my phone into my computer and turn on the Mass Storage option, I can see the drive from my PC, so some sort of driver is working!

So I am wondering what I might be missing? I want to update the phone (if needed) and also be able to run LG PC tools.

Or, if not necessary to run LG PC tools, let me know how I can do all those things without it? Manage contacts, transfer files etc. (or direct me to a helpful post).

I have tried searching forums and google for this but haven't really found any answers, just other people having the same issue.

If this is your first Android, hold off until you get used to the phone as you may decide you want to root later.

At the moment there is no way to root once you update and we don't think the roms out will work either once you do the update.

Agreed! Until you get familiar with it leave well enough alone. research and read the appropriate forums
