[LINK] [ROM] CM7 for Thunderbolt. RC1.2 Updated 7-6 11:59PM

What exactly are the advantaes of this rom ive beeb hearing abou it ever since i got my bolt. Dunno what is so great though. Anybody explain for a n00b? Im running bamf3.0rc4 now what is the benefit of this one?
AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project and is what you would get if you bought a Nexus phone. This is software directly from Google and isn't skinned other than the theme Google uses in their code. another advantage is that the ROM is smaller being that it doesn't contain all of the skinned UI elements (theme, widgets, bloatware, etc.) that manufacturers throw in.

Sense is htc's skinned ROM. What happened here is htc took AOSP, skinned it to make a Sense ROM, added widgets and other apps that the carrier might think the user would like. The disadvantage is that htc must grab AOSP each time it's released by Google and skin it before sending it to your phone. That is if they want to do it at all. One of the problems here is that manufacturers don't have to mess with it at all.

I prefer AOSP because it's faster and leaner than a manufacturer skinned ROM.

BAMF takes some aspects of Sense UI and then leaves some out and tweak them as they so choose... I like both. but AOSP is faster and leaner IMO... but sometimes it is less customizable.

Hope this helps ;)

IF ANYONE ELSE WANTS TO ADD TO THIS EXPLANATION.... FEEL FREE... I tried :P

It did very much so, i pictured cm as the equivalent to gentoo compared with ubuntu. thank you very much for your explanation, i will try cm but have a feeling i'll prefer bamf at this point in my android skillz.

Am I the only one that didnt get Marketplace app with this rom?

You need to load the GAPPS file in the same way you flashed the CM7 ROM... that will give you the Market, then log in using your main Gmail account and you will be asked what Google APPS you want to load.

Google did not want CM to load their apps on their ROM... this includes the Market app... so this is the work around.

Ok thanks. What else do GAPPS file do?

The Gapps zip is needed to add all of your Standard google apps into the AOSP rom... if you only flashed a AOSP rom without GAPPS then you wouldn't have any google apps at all, not even the market place. which is neccessary. basically thats all it does.

Hey I have a question ....
I have the last version of CM7 installed...but the links/files got updated....obviously I wud like to flash to most current version.
Do I need to do a full data wipe with 3x cache..etc wipe?
Do I need to reflash the gapps file as well?
Or just the updated CM7?

Thanks guys...people here are the best.

yes you need to do a full wipe... since these are release candidates there are generally major changes within the framework... if they were nightlies, then a simple cache and dalvik wipe would be fine. :) you will also need to reflash gapps too... think of it like starting over again but now you will have 1.2 instead of 1.1, have fun :)

Thanks i did what you said... just to make sure... the picture i added is from "about phone"
is this right? am I updated to the newest version?

I have the MR2 radio that I flashed with Bamf 2.1 remix about 2 weeks ago. Is there another radio I should flash when switching to this ROM or will the original MR2 be fine? Also, can someone recommend a kernel to go with this ROM?

You can use any of the 3 radios (MR2, 2.5, and the latest) for any GingerBread based ROM :) some people have better results with 2.5 or the newest, but any will do fine

back on board and everything is great. 4g connectivity on start up is greatly improved, i get 4g within seconds of start up, no more 3g and wait for 4g. I had to do a full wipe coming from the previous release. i tried updating to this and i could not get data connectivity, but all was well after full wipe and re install. so much smoother than any sense rom, don't think i'll be leaving this rom for a while.

Is there a way to backup CM7 custom settings? There are so many it's awesome. I'd like to do a fresh install because my ADW EX crashes a lot and I never did a full wipe for the current version. No biggie if not, but it's be cool if there is a way.

opjones is right, very smooth ROM. I dont think i can go back to the clutter and slowness of sense.

I dont think there is a way to back up the setting. I had to do a full wipe from the last version (which some might notice makes the difference).
But it would be nice to back up all the little settings. Pain in the butt to try to remember how i had everything set.

Overall great ROM.

Just to Note:

If you have done a full wipe (3x cache, dalvik, etc), and you still have problem with connectivity to 3g and 4g, reflashing the radio file (im using MR2.5) fixes everything.

Not sure there is a way to backup your settings and I was getting a ton of FC on ADW EX until I made a change which has cut down the FC.

in the general behavior>system preferences uncheck the wallpaper hack

Hope this helps out not sure why we get all these FC which I had using my Dinc too.

Maybe my backup pro? I know you can backup systems settings and android home. But coming from another rom and trying to restore android home in cm7 does not work. I'm not sure how well it works backing up in cm7 and restoring in cm7, Give it a shot and let us now :)

I wasn't restoring them from other sense roms because I didn't want any issues, but I will try it here. Good idea. Let you guys know how it goes later today.
