As SRK stated, your rom MUST be matched to your specific device. If the rom os for an A991, DO NOT try to flash it in your A990. You will be in bootloop hell.
This is why it's important to do a recovery backup BEFORE flashing anything. In fact, you should, before even attempting anything, determine what methods you can do to boot to the recovery menu (if your device has one) Some devices are simple (power off, hold vol+ and press power for a couple seconds, release power then vol). Some devices require 3 buttons, so you need to know this before starting.
As for rooting, it's relatively safe and lately things are pretty quiet as far as problems. This is due to the great apps available for rooting. (z4root, 1click, super1click, etc). Just because your device isn't listed as a supported device, doesn't mean it won't work. It could only mean they haven't tested your device, especially if it's not a well known device like your A990. Usually, rooting either works or it doesn't. Sometimes you have to do it a couple times or so until the root takes.
It's quit possible a custom Rom is not available for your device. It happens. Or perhaps you can only find a stripped down version of stock android, which is better than nothing as the bloatware is removed.
In closing, know how to recover your phone before starting anything. And I'm not talking about the backup app in the settings menu (if you get into bootloop hell, that option is useless), You need to know how to boot to the recovery menu as stated earlier.
And if in doubt, ask first
