Lock Screen ON

Hi,
I'm new to android - when I saw my phone this morning (it was charging overnight) the display was lightly lit. I know I pressed the power button when I plugged it in - so how do I turn the screen (display) off until I want it on again.
It was on a locked screen.

Pressing the power button briefly will turn off your screen.

I use a free app called Screen Off to do the same thing, as I find it easier to tap an icon on my home screen than to locate and push the power button (the case that I use makes pushing the power button a bit of a chore).
