Lock screen problem

I'd press the button on the back and it would stay on less than a second and no matter how many times i pressed the button it would keep doing it. And I've finally figured out why, its when its the front camera is covered/when its dark which was my assumption but i tested it. I don't have the smart stay option on or whatever its called and i just don't know what setting could be doing this. Does anyone know whats causing this???
