Lock Screen Timeout

How to extend the lock screen timeout? Every time I get a text message it'll light up for what seems like 3 seconds. Anybody know how to fix this? I can't seem to find this anywhere in the settings.

Settings -- > display --> unclick "smart stay" then change the "screen timeout" to a longer interval.

You can already do that even if it is checked. I meant like when the screen is asleep and you get a text it'll stay on for like 3 seconds. I just don't know how to change that to make it longer if you can even.
