Locked Phone vs Bootloader Lock

Quick question, switching from iPhone to Note 4, first time android user. I have been hearing a lot about a unlocked bootloader. Did some research and still a little confused about what the difference is between an unlocked phone and a unlocked bootloader. What are the advantages of having one or the other || are they one in the same ?

How do you get your bootloader unlocked? (In theory not looking for details, I can look that up)
