lollipop sms issues still

Has anyone figured out a work around yet for the text notification problem yet? The one where if you receive a text, respond, set the phone down with the app still open and no more notifications are heard? I keep missing responses. I don't usually close the app since I know I'm going to get an immediate response. Problem started with 4.4.4 update and I was hoping the 5.0 would have corrected it.
