Long Term Phone.....ya think?

I had to get rid of my note 2. In the final weeks I had to delete pictures,, I had to delete 20 of my favorite apps all because of no space. I won't run into that issue with the note 3. 32 gig on board and 32 gig sd card,,, i am silly with space.

THE BEAST,,NOTE 3. SIZE IS EVERYTHING!!!

If could be interesting. Personally, I need to stick with one device for at least the next year because its getting embarrassing for me. I believe I'm on phone 31 in the last 6 years. People close to me are starting to think I have a problem and it is becoming increasingly difficult to defend myself.

I have the same problem. People give me me a hard time all the whenever I get a new phone. I joined a fantasy football league and they made my name "phone fetish"

What wouldn't it possibly run? A YouTube video? A game?

Only thing I can really see happening is if 4K screens and gaming comes to phones, that could be an issue if the games don't have any form of downgrading resolution.

The biggest issue I had with my Rezound is it started getting laggy during normal use. Having worked in the semiconductor industry for over 7 years, I saw how fragile and delicate these components can be. I remember in some of the training courses, they explained to us how the static electricity we come in contact with on a typical dry winter would have the same effect of like a bolt of lightning crashing down on land. Considering how we as consumers treat these devices on average, they certainly are a modern marvel. Once I start noticing my device is acting peculiar after a software re-install, I figure it's only a matter of time before the device completely fails.

4K On a phone screen. I wonder how useful that would be.

How have you had it for 2.5 years when the Galaxy Nexus came out in November 2011?

Wait you're right...I originally got the Nexus S in March 2011 then had to replace it when I gave it to my wife after her phone was stolen. Replaced it with the GNex at the end of December 2011.

decided to jump in.

the list in my sig, the curve (worst design ever track ball went out every 3weeks or so) and iphone 3gs have been 2 year phones the 4s might have been a 2 year. the gs3 was a 3 month phone reason was i wanted the gs4 for the features but, with out reading about flashing roms i would have passed.

now i get my upgrade 3months before mine (i am on my gmas account so i gave her the 4s should have waited for a year, so i could bypass att next thats seems its more expensive then this method

Reading through hundreds of reports of things not working properly on N3, isn't it already the time to upgrade? :p

I truly think that in many cases these issues have been greatly overblown. I don't have any radio issues like some have reported. I did figure out why my battery was draining fast. But I have resolved that issue. The home button issue really isn't that bad either. My home button can become slightly ; and I mean slightly crooked when nudged by my finger. But it isn't really noticeable and doesn't get in the way of how the phone performs. This is a really good phone. And anyone thinking of getting one really should try it

Still, judging strictly by the sheer number of expressed complaints and disappointments, should one expect that from the most advanced to date, beastly phone?

One should because it has happened to every manufacturer of smartphones. Apple, HTC, LG, Motorola, BlackBerry. No hardware manufacturer is exempt from issues with initial batches for electronics.

I agree with you, in principle, but I'm not clear what exactly are the "initial batches." Should one expect better hardware batches to follow? Or the hope is really for firmware updates?

Usually when there are hardware issues reported, they are resolved in later releases of that model. When the iPhone 5 first came out there were reports that the anodized aluminum on the black model scuffed easily. I had one that loomed beaten up after just a week of carrying it around without a case. That was the initial batch. When I got a phone replacement 6 months later, the problem had been resolved and the replacement was a lot more durable. So you see, these issues tend to get rectified. It's the cost of being an early adopter.

many people will post something wrong before posting something awesome. people like to complain. ever see a truck with a sign asking to call about " how is my driving?"? people will only call when they drive bad, and not when they drive good. look at yelp. people will post most of the time if it was a bad experience. yeah you get a good review here and there, but most reviews for any thing are pretty bad. and one will most definitely find bad reviews, if that is what you are looking for.

What will most likely change people's take on how long they keep the phone is the next generation of apps and fearures. It would be nice if all apps and features held at their current levels, but don't count on it.

A little off topic, but I wonder if the people that bought "3D" phones a few years ago thought their 3 device would keep them satisfied for more than a few months....

I don't know if anybody has truly studied this, but I wonder if, by analogy with computers, no today's software can even remotely match today's hardware. So, most users would never use even a 1% of what N3 offers. Reminds me of how a long time ago we giddily wasted our money on the most advanced, at that time, TI calculator.

I steal upgrades & sell my slightly used phones, because the other 2 in my group choose to own flip phones & no data ;) I just sold my Note 2 after 3 months & had the S3 for about year before that ... the Note 4 should be the phone with a couple more refinements that I want & have no idea what they should be ;)

Cheers, Jon
Do you outright pay for the phone, or do you snatch a family member's upgrade and give them your hand-me downs? I've thought about doing that very thing with my relatives, but it seems a little selfish to give them my hand me downs.

That being said, I'm used to hanging onto a phone for at least the 18 months that they build out the contract for (As you can see by my last phone, a Rezound). Hardware wise, the Note 3 should be a sufficient piece of hardware for at least 9 months to a year, as most phones go. What typically drives consumers is the next advancement in cell phone technology. I'm willing to bet that my old Touch Pro 2 is still adequate enough, but there's no way I'd find that old phone functional.
