Really? Can you give me more details? Maybe I can let my friend know... that'd be great because he'll be able to keep the phone as a backup.

Your have to go down to the Apple store and talk to someone there. They'll enter the information of the phone and if it's covered under the program they'll tell you. It's worth a shot, worse they can say is no but it is a known issues to them.

I have never seen an OEM battery swell up, even on older phones.

I have seen the cheap Chinese Ebay knockoffs swell up though, on phones w/removable batteries.

I've seen it happen on OEM phones, phone with aftermarket replacements, etc... These types of batteries can and do swell. Sometimes it's because the battery is of poor quality (3rd party batteries are sometimes made using cells that failed OEM testing and got rejected).... it could be because they took some sort of unnoticed physical damage, or got too hot (left on a car dashboard in summer for instance)or were subject to abusive usage.

Now, ALL of them swell over time, but given normal conditions, the swelling isn't significant and the phone should have tolerances designed to allow for this. If you have a phone that is showing visible signs that the battery is swelling... like if the back or screen is bulging or pushing out... DO NOT USE THE PHONE... that sort of extreme swelling is a sign that the thing is damaged goods. Most of the time, nothing will come of it, but you don't want one of these things to have a thermal runaway and go all Note 7 on you.

Now... the S8... You better believe that Samsung learned a hard lesson last fall. They aren't going to tickle that dragon again and I am sure the S8 and S8+ have more than ample tolerances to allow for a little bit of swelling (Note 7 had none).

Aw heck no. I can't even manage to keep them for six months.

Nope but I wouldn't keep any phone for that long!! Besides, I personally think it's all about how you handle and maintain your phone on how long they will actually last. Every one of my phones, even the first ones that you had to keep for 2 years looked like I just just took them out of the box. And they performed just as well too.

My Samsung laptop is going strong at 4 years. Battery or heat caused the bottom plastic to bludge out a little. I look at smartphones like mini laptops. Yes they can last very long and I would keep it for a long time (though the sealed batteries are going to be a problem). Smartphones are reaching the $1000 pricetag, if you see a lower price you're still paying the carrier fees that you think is just a monthly bill. Getting the latest and greatest is starting to lose its appeal. Could use that 1k amount towards a nice vacation.

It's not like you pay the full $1000 upfront. It's paid out over 24 months.

That's true, depends on the user and how they use and treat their phones. I worked at Best Buy and I've seen some terrible stuff... bulging batteries, extremely slow phones, etc. some people don't know how to care for the phone, sometimes leaving it in the sun, charging it for too long, throwing it around..
