longer ring, prior to going to voicemail?

Is there any way to make the phone ring longer, prior to switching to voicemail? Pretty cold out here on the farm/ranch, and my phone is burried underneath a couple of layers of clothing. Seems my phone always switches to voicemail before I can get it out of my pocket?

Nope, number of rings (duartion of time) before going to voicemail is determined by the carrier.

Jim, you might want to google "slot cycle index". I had a problem with my old Hero where the phone was not ringing on my end even though the caller was hearing rings on their end. Call your cell phone from another cell phone or land line and see how many rings you hear before the phone actually rings.

Changing your slot cycle index involves getting your msl from sprint and going into the programming menus to change it from whatever it is (probably 2 or 3) to 1. I haven't done this with the Optimus but I did with my Hero and it made a big difference. I didn't miss near as many calls after changing it to 1.

I haven't had my Optimus long enough to know if this is a problem with this phone. Someone else can probably weigh in on that.

You would need to switch to GSM where you can set it up to 30 seconds, with CDMA there is a delay before the phone even rings and the ring time is set short as well.

I think though Jim is looking for probably 15 or 20 more seconds which SCI won't help with

Only on an iDEN phone. (Nextel)

I use Google voice for my voicemail. I set it up so that my phone rings through to voicemail, usually about 4 rings. Then it rings me back through the GV system and is usually good for another 4 rings or so.

I get aprox 8 rings if I ignore it.

If you don't have a GV account GO NOW! Sprint has free conditional call forwarding and its a snap to set it up.

i hate to disagree as you are a tech and i am a customer but i'm 99% sure i was on sprint side when i had them increase my ring time and change my caller id (when i call a landline with callerid, it shows as "Joshie" lol). but my memory is fading so i could be wrong.

granted this was a couple of years ago that i had them do it, but they had no problems and knew just what i was talking about when i called them up. hopefully things haven't changed?

Changing your caller ID is no problem, extending ring time has always been an iDEN only add. Trust me, been telling people no for 5 + years...lol

Matty.ny.tech is telling the truth. For some reason, Sprint does not have the ability to make the phone ring longer. Although it seems like a brighter solution would be for Sprint to make the default ring length longer. Then if the customer wants the call to go to voicemail sooner, they can push 'end call' while its ringing to send the call to voicemail. Sometimes the smartest solution is the simplest one.
