Looking at the Axon 7.

The Axon 7 seems like it is a nice phone. However, I am leery about buying another ZTE phone after experiencing their abysmal support for the Axon Pro. When it came out, about a year before the Axon 7, it was billed as a reasonably priced flagship alternative with a similar price to the current Axon 7. The Axon Pro is not a bad phone, although the software experience isn't the smoothest. The problem is that after upgrading the phone to Marshmallow, ZTE has abandoned any software support including security updates. If this was a $100 phone I could forgive the lack of support. The Axon 7 will definitely be upgraded to Nougat. However, don't be surprised if the phone is abandoned by ZTE afterwards.

I can see this happening it's always a concern for a lot of us.
Not intensely worried however since I'm used to most of my other phones having been dropped as far as updates.
Huawei/Honor might end up the winner for phone updates which just might set a trend for other manufacturers.

I'll be good for a year with N and app updates then it will be on to another great midship phone for me.

I hope you're right about this. OnePlus has also been more conscientious about putting out updates since the introduction of the OnePlus 3. Ironically it seems like recently the carrier based versions of phones from Motorola, Samsung, LG, etc. have had more consistent updates than the unlocked versions, like the MOTO Z and Samsung Galaxy. Things really haven't changed that much. The overwhelming majority of cell phone sales are still tied to carriers despite the supposed elimination of contracts.

Just about all companies drop support after one year...or maybe 18 months. The manufacturer does not make money on providing software updates. They have to pay people to make the latest software work on "older" hardware without getting anything back...except possibly customer loyalty. The main way they make money is by getting people to buy a new phone. Business.

Well I guess I've looked at the A7 long enough.
Here are 10 thoughts about it:

Works fine on T-Mobile and an MVNO using the AT&T network.
LTE and Wi-Fi connections for me have been bulletproof so far.
No drops and no slowdowns in the Sacramento CA area.

Goes without saying music from this thing is stellar.
Amazing we can enjoy such sound clarity and detail from these devices.

Screen is gorgeous as far as I can see.
I'm not overly nit-picky about screens tho.

Call quality is good.
I won't use this for calls much however even with VoLTE.
Had no trouble simply sliding a SIM in and having MMS work here.
Another great device I bought recently had a problem with MMS on AT&T.
Not the A7 though no problems sending MMS at all "yay!"

The ZTE MiFavor OS features are ok for me.
Close to stock so I'm not disappointed or overly excited either.

Impressed with the manufacturing quality of this phone.
Very good feel to it with some weight.
So happy I got the dark grey one.
Again very nice.

Fingerprint sensor is OK.
Fails about once in five tries.
I may need to reset the fingerprint profiles.
Good enough overall yet not the fastest.

Non-lit hardware navigation keys are driving me nutz.
I was worried about this so I'm using one of the after market onscreen key apps in order to alleviate frustration there.
A 3rd party app is workable so far since MiPop was somewhat irritating for this user.

I'm not using the default camera app.
Opted for "Snap Camera" instead:

The camera is pretty dismal in lower light of course.
I'll need to fiddle with it more to hopefully get better results there.
Good light pics look sharp and pleasing to me although somewhat bland without a little post processing.
I'm not displeased with the camera due to it's features and potential.

I was a bit surprised this phone doesn't show as camera 2 API capable.
At least it showed "failed" when checking.
Smartphone camera performance seems all over the board these days anyway.
Maybe the checker I used is unreliable?

I won't go on...these were things I wanted to touch on being a brand new user.
A new phone is always so much fun!

ZTE dropped any support for the Axon Pro in less than 6 months I would have been happy if they supported the phone for 18 months. For their flagship devices most companies are promising updates for 2 years now. It is not good business for companies to drop support so quickly. Because of the way they treated customers that bought the Axon Pro a lot of people, including me, will not buy another phone from ZTE.

I really wonder what some poster are still doing on this forum. If you're so disappointed with the A7, why haven't you moved on to something else? Why are you still posting here? Still using something that you don't like? Sounds weird to me... not very... smart.

Hey guys excited at last my Axon 7 premium version has arrived 128gb with 6gb ram and force touch... Today 1st day with it... Getting use to it... So far lovin it

I seriously considered returning this Axon 7 because of the hardware keys. I didn't pick this phone up for a while. Actually started a return for it on Amazon then cancelled the following day.
After a cooling off period and finding the simple control app I'm a lot happier.
This really is a fine well made phone in my opinion.
Benefits have won over any disappointment.

Anyhoo just a small update.
All is well...

Yeah.. Have been using it for 10 days now... Have got used to the button placement and know that it's not back-lit..

I keep seeing folks complaining about the buttons not being backlit. The Mi-POP feature solved that concern for me, I use it nearly all the time. Why not give it a try?

Mi-Pop is a solution that's true.
I found it somewhat troublesome in certain situations.
I went another way as stated further up in this thread.
I still avoid using my A7 when the lights go out generally.
The ravages of age are not kind to the eyes.
😖
