AC Question

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a cheap (maybe a no-name) tablet that is easy to root and is something I can just have around my home that I will use to stream music to my stereo, use as an alarm clock, etc (mostly just use for media)

It doesn't necessarily need to support the latest Android version (Nougat), but if 2 tablets are similar in price, then I would go with the tablet that supports the newer version.

I've seen many on eBay, but not sure if this is the direction I should go as I don't know anything about them including whether they are easy to root.

Thanks in advance!

Great question!

Rooting is certainly a unique experience, and one depending on manufacturer can be real hit or miss! Have you considered some of the older Nexus tablet devices for rooting? Based on your use case above I don't see the need for something super heavy duty, but both the Nexus 7 2013 edition and the Nexus 9 would make fantastic tinkering devices. While their specs are certainly showing their age at this point, i'd still consider these over a no-name brand because you can actually still get some decent usability out of these should you desire (media consumption). The nexus community also has a lot of one click rooting tools that make first time rooters successful. You can pick the Nexus 7 up for between $75-150 depending on condition, and the Nexus 9 will run you usually $165-225. Despite the Nexus 9's mixed press feelings I still think its a solid contender as an Android tablet. Albeit there aren't that many good ones to choose from unfortunately!

Hi, thank you for your feedback. I decided to purchase a cheap tablet through swappa.com - in fact I ordered a Nexus 7 2012 which should work just fine and will be easy to root and will stream my music just fine, will allow me to control my home automation stuff, etc.
