Looking for HDR Explanation (Camera)

OK, can someone explain to me how the HDR on this S III is supposed to work? So far, I understand it is supposed to take two pictures and combine them using digital magic to make a beautiful still.

If that was true, why do TWO pics show up in my gallery? Shouldn't I only be seeing one? If it was leaving the "original" images and then creating the merged, shouldn't I have three?

I do notice that one of them has "hdr" in the filename and the other does not, but I'm still confused as to exactly why there are two and not three or only one.

usually when creating an HDR image there should be 3+ images at different exposure levels which are combined to give a "high dynamic range" to the final image. From what I've seen on the GS3 it's not a very strong HDR image, at least in the few i've taken, it just looks a little brighter. But yes, the phone is saving a normal image then the "HDR" image, iirc the iphone does the same thing saving 2 images
