Lookout's False Alert

Ever since I updated to Lollipop, Lookout has sent me false alert to my email notifying that my sim card was removed, EVERY SINGLE DAY! But my phone is with me and fine!
Anyone else experiences this?
And it uses the most CPU power of all apps.
What to do?

Uninstall it?

There are a number of complaints about this in the Play Store user comments. I found one where Lookout replied that they are aware of the problem and it ”should be fixed in the next couple of releases ”.

I am having the same problem virtually every day, usually between 1900 & 1905, but I don't believe it is just a false indication by Lookout. On my HTC On M8 GPe, it actually does go through a real reboot spontaneously each time, without any intervention from me. For anyone seeing the indication, but doubting if a reboot has actually occurred, I suggest installation of the Reboot Logger app to confirm the reboot. It's a very simple little app that reliably reports on any hardware reboot.

I may remove Lookout temporarily, just to see if the problem still occurs, or not. In the meantime, I've contacted support@lookout.com to get their response directly.

The response I got from Lookout is a bit different than what I was expecting. They indicated that they are working on the issue whereby a Theft Alert for SIM card removal is triggered during a restart/power off of a device, and that they expect to have a fix soon. They suggested that if I wanted to get rid of the emails I would need to disable the SIM Theft Alert via the Settings on the Lookout app. That response from them does not suggest that Lookout is causing the underlying restart conditions that I know are actually occurring virtually every day, about 1900 EST.

I went ahead and temporarily disabled the SIM Theft Alert in Lookout to see what will happen, if anything, with respect to the reboots themselves.

I apologize for my multiple posts on this thread, but I am following up on the issue on my HTC One M8 GPe. Since I disabled the Lookout SIM Theft Alert yesterday, the daily reboot occurred right on schedule again today, captured in the Reboot Logger app at 1903, but Lookout didn't generate any Threat Alerts. Unless you have the Reboot Logger app installed, it's very easy for spontaneous reboots to slip by unnoticed, especially if you don't use a Security PIN or Password. In my case, I use a PIN, but with Trusted Places (Home) and Trusted Devices (my Pebble Watch) in the Smart Lock feature, so I usually don't have to enter my pin unless I leave home, separate the watch from the phone, or if the phone reboots, and in each incidence that Reboot Logger has captured, the PIN entry was required of me, and in a couple of instances, I had tried to use the phone while it was in the process of crashing and was non-responsive, and I forced a power recycle trying to get a response from the phone. Other than that, the reboots have been completely spontaneous.

FWIW, the only day this last week that the problem didn't occur, was on the day that we traveled about 50 miles from home to visit family members at the time it usually would have happened. I'm not sure yet what to conclude by that, but it might be quite relevant.

At this point, I really don't believe that Lookout is the underlying source of the reboots. If anyone else is sharing this problem, it would be very helpful for us to compare notes between us to help isolate the source of the problem. The only good news so far is that it is so predictable, and it seems I'm not alone in experiencing it.

I think that I now know the underlying activity that is causing the spontaneous daily system reboots on my HTC One M8 GPe, at 1900 EST, which will trigger the false Lookout SIM Card Removed Threat Warning. I now believe all of this occurs on that device because of my use of the new Smart Lock/Trusted Places feature in Android 5.0.1

The problem only occurs when I am at a Trusted Place, at 1900 EST (which is 0000 Greenwich time, start of a new day). At 1900, in this circumstance, the phone will go through a period of non-response, and internally reboot. Subsequently, I then need to enter my PIN to access the phone. If I'm away from a Trusted Place at that time, there is no system interruption, and my Trusted Device (Pebble Watch) still allows me to open the phone from a lockscreen without entering my PIN.

Today, I removed the active Trusted Place from my phone, and it went through the 1900 time period with no issues. That is no guarantee that the results will always be the same, and I'm going to continue to confirm whether this once-a-day event will consistently not happen with Trusted Places turned OFF, but I have a fair confidence it will continue to work properly this way.

UPDATE: Dang! I had 3 good days without the 7PM reboots and false SIM removal warnings from Lookout after disabling Trusted Places, but tonight I got hammered with another one, exactly on time. I think I'l remove Lookout temporary to continue testing.

I have no idea if any other devices would be affected this way. I do know that with same Trusted Place active, my Nexus 7 (2013) is not experiencing the problem, so it clearly isn't a universal problem.
