Looks like Unrevoked3 got the 2.2 Root

I am thinking of doing the Root thing, Im an advanced windows PC user, But Major Noob in android, So I got a few questions,

When rooted do you loose HTC sense?
If so does any miss sense? not really sure what sense really does since the dinc is my first and only smart phone.

After a dinc is rooted and it be un-rooted? and is it harder to un-root?

From reading this post, I gather that the main reason to root is to remove bloatware and get wifi tether without having to pay big red?

Is there any other major advantage to rooting?

sry if these questions are stupid, dont mean to bug ya's, just want to make sure i know whats going on before I make my first base jump ;)
Thanks
Ken

Well Windows power user lemme talk in terms you will understand. ;)

Basically when you receive your device you only have user rights on the phone. Meaning you can't change system files etc, and some options aren't available to you. When you root you are gaining exactly that root. In the linux world root is the end all be all user level, in windows it's known as administrator.

So no when you root you don't lose anything, it just gives you elevated permissions on the system. There are numerous reasons to root a phone, the most popular being removing preloaded apps you don't want or need and wifi tethering. However there is a full bevy of things in front of you to try once you root your phone. Like installing over clock-able kernels for speed, undervolted kernels for power savings, themes, vanilla ui's instead of sense, and the list goes on and on!

Rooting is highly recommended by a lot of people. Especially if you are a control junkie, like to have the latest and greatest, or really like to push your device. A lot of people do it just so they can theme sense. So really it's up to how much you really want to do on your device.

Like the old Windows saying, "What do you want to do today?".

@Qazme
Thanks for the reply
I read elsewhere that you need at least 2 gig's free on your SD to root. I have the 2 gig sd that big red included with the phone and I have stuff stored to it. Is the needing 2 gig free thing real? If so Can I remove everything from my sd card and use it, being only a 2 gig card?

Can I un- root as easy as rooting? in case I have a warranty issue I would need fixed?

Thanks
Again
Ken

You just need a memory card in there. No certain size as long as you can fit the files needed on there. (Which with Unrevoked is VERY minimal.)

just rooted on my DInc running 2.2...can anyone point me in the right direction for removing these apps that verizon installed?

Get Root Explorer in the Market. It's the best $3 you can spend.

I created a directory on the SD Card called SDBackup, and then created a system dir then an apps dir /SDBackup/System/apps.

From the phone's /system/apps I moved the
amazonmp3.apk
CityID.apk
com.htc.FriendStreamWidget.apk
com.htc.FriendStreamWidget.odex
Facebook.apk
FieldTest.apk
FriendStream.apk
FriendStream.odex
HTCCarPannel.pak/odex
HTCFaceBook.apk/odex
HTCFootprints.pak/odex
HtcFootprints.apk/odex
HtcTwitter.apk/odex
VZNav.apk
VZW_Skype.apk

Then create SDCardBackup/System/etc and from the phones system.etc move
CDROM.ISO

Remember to move them to the SD Card rather then just delete them. This way if you ever need to you can restore them.

Have Fun!

Or you can simply rename them from .apk / .odex to .bak / .odexbak and they won't load and you don't have to move them. ;)

How long did it take you guys to run the SDK setup on your computer? Im doing it now and its taking forever....says its installing archives. This usually take this long?

Are these instructions up to date? I got up to:

"4. Copy the unrEVOked3 recovery reflash tool to a new directory on your desktop and run it. It will extract a bunch of files, including drivers for the phone."

The reflash didn't extract any files, it ran UnrEVOked3 and was waiting for me to plug my phone in. Not sure if that was expected or not, but I wanted to be sure before I continued. :)

This is my first root attempt and here is what i did. FYI I'm a n00b!
I skipped the part about copying files and extracting files. Just make sure you download the hboot drivers. Do the driver steps were it says to change your android 1.0 device drivers. Run the file downloaded from Unrevoked

I'm pretty much new to all this. I installed root as I wanted to use Titanium Backup and remove bloat crap. I actually feel like the phone is slower since I ran Unrevoked3 3.2.1. The menus seem to pause or hang at times. I know I can install custom roms, not sure how. What's a good starting point to learn about different things you can do with root? Any recommendations on what I should do? I use PDAnet or the not to be mentioned VZW trick so hotstop isn't needed.

About a minute or less. It will take longer if you tell it to download any of the packages, depending on computer and network speed.

No they are extremely dated.

Glad you got it running!

However simply rooting your phone doesn't affect any operation on your phone. By this I mean all it does is give you root permissions so you can change things, it will not affect how your phone runs. So your phone will not run faster or slower depending on root.

The best thing for a new root user to do would be to start browsing through the various forums and reading A LOT. A good starting point that has many links, files, and help are the XDA forums.

best thing i've seen all day.

now for the radio update.

NO, all it does is give you root access. If you already have Froyo you have the 7.28 radio but there is a 9.01 radio that you can update too. However from my experience it kills your battery.
