I finally worked up the ambition to do the sim card and battery pull last night. Lost data a couple of times but app didn't jam as before and data returned on its own without a reset.
This pretty much mirrors our experience with the wife's phone, I think we have solved our problem...
The VZ tech I've been working with has really been great, he's going to call me back Friday to confirm that all is well.
I was looking at data use on "My Verizon", 29.379 GB in 18 days for my phone, wow!
