Lost photos since replacing phone

Hi all

Yesterday I noticed an album I had created on my Galaxy s4 has disappeared. It contained photos received, sent, downloaded, screenshotted etc from January 2014 to recently. I had created the folder by moving items from various folders into this particular one. I have tried to retrieve the items by backing up everything to Dropbox and to Google Photos. Both have shown there is nothing on my phone pre-October 2014 which is the date I replaced my phone - however this folder was definitely there just a few weeks ago! I am now on Android 5.0.1

What on earth has happened to this folder?

I have just removed my battery (unrelated, just needed to charge my spare) and yet another folder has gone missing! At my wits end here
