Rooting allows access to system level files allowing you to modify them if you choose
the benefits in my opinion far out weigh the risk however if you don't know what you're doing just don't edit or delete anything on the root level of your file system
you can still enjoy root privileges though some of the best apps require root access
also once you have root access you can install a custom recovery once in place a custom recovery make it so its impossible to break your phone on a software level it allows you to backup and restore your device and flash custom roms/software
if anything goes wrong just boot into custom recovery and restore a backup or just flash a new rom
In fact you will most liked get addicted to trying out different roms then you will be a flashaholic
Like the rest of us:D
With the Samsung prevail you have to use a PC program called Odin Odin is a program that uses special file packages designed for individual devices
Just Google Samsung prevail root
And you should find a link for Odin and the sph-m820 .op packages follow the directions
I could not get any other method to work right now Odin is the only reliable method available and its easy
