"Low on space" "Text message memory full" Errors

Rooted Optimus S
Internal phone storage: 5.16MB Available
SD card: 25.52GB Available

Used Ti Backup to move most user apps to SD card. User apps not on SD card:
Astro, GTasks, OnOff WidgetPack, Terminal Emulator

Cache cleared on *all* apps -- user and system.
Deleted All Threads in Messaging. Google Voice still has all it's messages (507 or so...)
System Panel (and System Info widget) reports 216MB Available internal memory.
Getting "Low on space" and "Text message memory full" error messages.

Not sure why the discrepancy between the system's assertion that there is only 5.16MB internal memory available, and System Panel's 216MB.

How do I free up the rest of the internal memory? Can I somehow put a symbolic link in the file system for Google Voice text messages and store them on the SD card?

It seems that 5.16MB free internal phone storage is not enough. You say you are rooted, but are you on the Stock ROM? On Sprint's forums I've seen reports of others getting the same error when internal storage dips anywhere below 30MB. My wife's phone was getting those errors @ around 10MB free internal phone storage, and deleting apps fixed the problem for her.

If you want to stay on the stock rom, you'll have to delete apps.

You can always flash a custom recovery and CM7 and use data2ext to move your entire app partition to SD (and gain alot more space for apps in the process).

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me... Not much stock apps that I use, if I can get load Google apps. I thought I saw where CM7 had to stop shipping them, but someone else packaged them up so it wasn't that difficult to re-install...

I've spent so much time trying to clean this up with the stock rom, I could have easily of put in a rom manager and CM7 and had time to get the real things done that I need to do. Oh, well.

If going to CM7, does it make sense to stick with Froyo on the LG Optimus S or can it handle Gingerbread?

Uninstalled AutoCAD WS and the problem went away. Funny, I had used Ti Backup to put it on the SD card, but apparently, there is quite a bit of it still on internal storage. I now have 21MB.

On my stock ROM I hover between 59 and 64 MB free. I've got about 40 apps that I've downloaded from the market plus the pre-installed apps from Sprint. Even so, I plan on installing a custom ROM over the weekend in an effort to increase memory and extend battery life.

I made it through rooting the phone... I'll read up on flashing the CM7 rom. Always good to be pointed in the right direction (my rooting experience did not start off well).

Another closet memory hogger is the stock email app. When you delete an email from the app, it just goes into the trash. Then you have to manually delete each email again. For some reason, there is no "select all" option. I freed up 15 megs doing that after figuring out why I had no more internal memory.

Oh, and if you don't want to flash a whole new ROM, try flashing the picasticks kernel. I got several more megs free from that. Plus, you can over clock the CPU with that kernel.

Again, ROM Manager is a no-no. Also, CM7 is Gingerbread, no choice there on your part. Gingerbread is nice and the functions and customizations/tweaks are incredible.

Just install custom recovery first then you can install a rom.

I carefully read through the comments on the different roms and ended up flashing Drew Walton's CM ROM and XioniaRedux kernel. First time doing it and it was remarkably fast and easy. I use Ti Backup, so it was easy to get my apps and data installed again (TIP: Open Terminal Emulator and type "su" (no quotes) to force the new SuperUser app to start up. Then try Ti Backup, making sure to completely quit the app before opening it up again. It will ask for Super User access which you can't do until you have started up SuperUser, at least once.)

Wow! What a difference in internal storage and battery life! Gingerbread is nice. After adding Swype Beta, it really started to feel good. I'll post up in Drew Walton's CM thread if I run in to any issues. Thanks to everyone who replied. For those who are on the fence about getting rid of their stock rom and switching to a gingerbread variant... the grass really is much greener over here.

Have to agree with you. Did the same last night with little effort. I opted to re-download my apps from the market which was a bit time consuming, but I think my patients will pay off in the long run.

I was glad I had my TB backup however, I had a small problem with voicemail that I was able to correct as a result.

Re-read the thread, and look at LG Optimus S Rooting, ROMs, and Hacks at the top of the forum.

My only advice: use Gingersnap instead of trying to follow the Gingerbreak thread/process. From my experience, Gingerbreak = hours (and unsuccessful); Gingersnap = minutes (success!)

LOL! I'm still in the dark here. Figured out Tapatalk. That only took me 4 days. I've been trying to download apk's from the site and I keep getting a msg saying my phone doesn't support that option. I've tried dl'ing stuff from my PC to an sd & putting it in my phone, I've tried to dl directly to the phone. NOTHING is working for me. I'm just as lost as I was in the beginning. I've succeeded in dl superuser, but nothing really happens when I open it.

From the email app (not gmail), go Menu (button) >> Folders >> Trash... then manually tick all the messages and press Delete at the bottom.

Fyi, after a while the messages add up but deleting them doesn't clean up the dialer storage.
Under settings, apps, running, find the "dialer" app. Select it and click clear data. It will delete all texts and call log and clean out the dialer storage. The first time I did it mine went from 24mb back down to 324kb.
