Okay I know there are hundreds of threads going over this problem, but I want a fix to this problem, I cant stand having to keep clearing data on facebook and deleting applications, once im low on space push notifications dont come in anymore so I cant just put up with it.

Is there anything to fix this problem? whether its a custom ROM, or moving apps over to the SD card. How do I fix this?

The best solutions I could find are to uninstall apps you don't use, clear data and cache for all your apps, and move some apps to your SD card if you can.

I had this problem before switching to CyanogenMod and since then I have loaded more apps than I had before and do not have that warning anymore. Will it never come back? I don't know but hope it doesn't. Either way it seems CyanogenMod left me with more space to play with.

I've noticed that the Flash player update did that to my phone consistently.

That happened to me about 3 months ago. My dialer storage was at an insane 79mb! That is where all my text messages were stored. I had over 13,000 texts from the day I got to phone. Cleared that and it has been good ever since. Although we all know it is a glitch within the way the phone reads internal memory, simple maintanence will help.
Old apps I don't use: Gone.
App Data cache: Clear it.

That is what I do.

I was constantly getting that error until my DINC had a problem with the Market and essentially did a hard reset (I had to manually uninstall and reinstall my apps). Haven't had the problem since.

Biggest offenders seemed to be text messages (had to delete the person I texted the most), and Opera Mobile (love the browser, but something about it kept triggering the low on space message).

I'm really hoping that we finally get the Gingerbread update for our phones very soon and that this issue is solved...

The problem is the 150mg limit in the data/data folder. This is where apps store their data. If you have an app that stores 5megs in the data/data folder and you move that app to the SD 5megs is still in the data/data folder, so moving the app to SD does not help. CM7 still has the 150meg limit so that does not help either. Most people say it does, but they have not been running CM7 as long so it have not manifested itself.

Steps to the solution:
Step1: Realize this limitation exist, except that fact, and manage it.
Step2: Clear cache and data periodically from apps that has a lot of data.
Step3: For better control and visualization of this limit root your phone and install Root Explorer. If you navigate to data/data you can see how much of the 150meg limit is used. Currently I am running CM7 and my data/data shows 65.47 used and 83.53 remaining so I am fine. I can easily cause my data to run low and I could still get out of space message even with CM7
Step 4: use a cache cleaning app such as cache cleaner NG which will help free up more space in the data/data folder.

Is there any indication that Gingerbread alleviates the 150MB limitation?

I already clear the entire cache daily, using 1Tap Cleaner. I also clear offending apps' data regularly, too.

Is there any way to view the contents of the "data/data" folder without rooting? (BTW, why is it called the "data/data" folder and not just the "data" folder?)

Good post on the how-to and benefits of cleaning up Contacts Storage. (Mine is only 3.38MB.)

So the 150MB+ limit is an HTC limitation--not an Android one? Then do we have any indication that HTC is aware of this serious limitation and is working to fix it? Does the same limitation apply to other Android-based HTC phones?

From my research, this is an HTC limitation, not an Android one. There are posts on HTC's forums, so they are aware of the problem, but I have never seen any indication they plan to fix it. At the very least, I hope they learned what NOT to do for the future. I've seen other people post about this problem that don't own an Incredible but rather some other HTC phone, so my understanding is this limitation is baked into multiple current models of HTC phones.
