Mac Root for 2.1 guide?

First post so I apologize if I sound super-noob-ish. I have read this thread like 10 times and find the directions to be very difficult to follow once I get to step 8.2 (where chefkeyser started running into probs). I have a Mac OSX 10.6.6, Hero baseband version 2.42.02.10.29, Software 2.32.651.2, running android 2.1-update 1. srkmagnus, you obviously have tremendous knowledge in this since you led chefkeyser through the process. Is there any way you can maybe re-post your directions--like a "final draft"? It would be much appreciated thanks!

Hi shark fan, welcome to Androidcentral :)

Here is an app that will root the Hero, chefkeyser used it.
[APP] z4root - xda-developers

One you press the button in the app to root the phone you need to download clockworkmod rom manager from the market and flash the clockwork mod recovery.

One the recovery is flashed you are good to go. Let me know if you run into problems along the way.

That's what I used, yes, I didn't even have to use my laptop except to move the rom and gapps zip files. The z4root is very painless and quick.

Wow, running Cyanogen 6.1 now....blown away. I can't believe how fast my Hero is now! Thanks again guys!

Can I overclock my processor with CM6.1?
Do I need to "re-flash" the ROM with the Google add-ons? Or can I install the Google apps w/out going through the ROM flash process?

Yes, you can overclock with CM 6.1. I think the kernal is capped at 691 and will require a flash of a new kernal that allows up to 768 clock speeds. 768 has proven unstable for many phones and 691 is the safer bet.

You will need to download "setcpu" from the market, or get it from XDA for free. "Overclock Widget" in the market and works as well. You will need either of the two to have more control of the clock.

If you don't want to install neither of the two, you will need to download Decad3nce's or Collins_ph battery tweak from the HeroC forums on XDA and set it up via Terminal Emulator on the phone. You will have far more control with either of the two tweaks.

- Collin_ph Collin_ph Battery Tweak RC1 for Cyanogen / Darch Froyo roms (possibly others) - xda-developers

- Decad3nce's Kernal/Battery Tweak for higher clock speeds (see second post for battery tweak) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756774

Decad3nce's is based off Collin_ph, but with various tweaks/improvements. Let me know if you need any help setting things up :)

I'm using aospMod 0.9.9.2, a vanilla Froyo ROM. It runs even faster than CM6. It doesn't have all of the same bells and whistles as Cyanogen (which are great), but it's pure Android. I just found Cyanogen to run a little slower. aosp is essentially a stripped down version.

Ok I'm back, having issues again. You guys helped me a ton last time, and I'm hoping you can help me again. I cracked my screen, and Sprint sent me a whole new phone, so of course I immediately want CM 6.1 back. I followed the usual steps, rooted with z4mod, then downloaded clockwork mod, flashed a recovery, but when I choose "install ROM from sd card", and I choose update-cm-610-rc1.zip, it just freezes on the white HTC load screen. I tried unrooting, then rooting again, and it won't work. I re-downloaded the cm6.1 .zip file, and it still freezes.

Then, I noticed that my phone kept asking me to update the HTC software, and I'm trying to do that now, and when it tries to reboot, it flashes the white HTC screen, then goes black and stays black....did I brick my phone somehow?

I'm thinking I'll just go back to the Sprint store and tell them that the phone they gave me is broken, install the HTC update FIRST, then go through with the root process?

When I try to boot the phone into recovery by holding down the down volume button, it freezes on the HTC screen as well.

Power off the phone and wait a few seconds (maybe 5-10). Then hold home+power until it loads into the Recovery.

When it loads, you need to select wipe data/factory reset from the menu and once finished, select advanced at the bottom and wipe dalvik cache.

Once you wipe the above, you can flash the ROM and gapps file then reboot. Let me know what happens.
