I'm not great at them either. I just get as close as I can and still be in focus, then crop the image.

I have a spider just like this one, that has been squatting in front of my front door the last few months. my wife and I joke that he's our new neighbor. I've been trying to get a good picture but he only really comes out in the evenings, so there isn't enough light to get a good macro picture.
