Magnetometer (Compass) Issue on Galaxy Nexus?

Has anyone noticed any issues with the compass on the Galaxy Nexus? I used to use the google sky map app all the time on my Nexus One and it never seemed to work right on the Galaxy Nexus. I decided to investigate and if I run the Compass app (catch.com's) even after trying to calibrate it the thing just doesn't seem to work right.

What happens in the compass is as follows. It starts out at about N or NW (340ish degrees) and as I spin it turns a little but it seems to be based on the accelerometer (I spin faster it moves more) but eventually always settles back to about N or NW. Even when I'm pointing South it thinks its North.

Is there a problem with my device or do others see this as well?

Same here, but not consistently. I just had it working fine...adjusted the website speed and damping settings.

What do you have them set to? I've tried a number of settings inside google sky map and also the compass app but it doesn't seem to change anything.

I tried my catch compass and it points exactly where North is and holds that location as I turn circles back and forth (looking odd to my neighbors, I'm sure). I remember that on Froyo, I think in the Location section of settings, there was a more thorough version of a compass calibrator, but I think that part of settings is now long gone.

Update: I'm not sure exactly what 'fixed' it, probably the 100th calibration attempt but I finally got it working. At first I was thinking it was the extended battery disrupting the magnetic field since I got it working with the standard battery but now it works with the extended as well. I just kept doing those figure eights and also per some other off site threads I did flips, horizontal and vertical of the phone as well and now it seems to work. Hope it stays working.

I'd still be interested to see if anyone else is having issues.

Mine doesn't work either. I'm having the same problems. I had an HTC Incredible and it had a built in calibration routine. I don't see anything in the Gal Nexus. I've tried doing the "flips" with it and figure eights. Still doesn't respond right.

Did anyone figure out how to get it working?

I had the same problem on all my android phones EXCEPT the Incredible. It was the only one I could actually use Sky Map with. Every phone since then, including the Galaxy Nexus, has no idea where any of the planets are. Ugh.

Its like it doesn't know which direction I'm facing. I rotate the phone and it doesn't rotate the sky view like it should. Seems there might be a calibration issue but I don't know how to calibrate the thing.

The GPS Status app has a calibration tool in it .It may be worth a shot ,its a free app in the playstore
