Forgive my ignorance, I'm a newbie. What is this? I thought it was just a fancy name for a compass but when I looked it up it seems more like a device for finding magnetic interference.

It's just a compass, isn't it

I would like to know this as well. I've heard someone say it can act as a metal detector.

Hmmm... a person on the beach with a N7 looking for coins...
^^^ that'll be me ;)

My understanding is that it can in fact be used to locate metal objects, just like a metal detector.

I actually read in a review that I came across that the person was able to use it with metal detecting apps and it worked well.

Unfortunately, I can't recall which review I read this in... It was The Verge or PC Magazine or something... Blah, I'm not sure...

I couldn't find references to metal detectors in either the verge or pc mag reviews.

Just do a search for Metal Detector in the app store. "Smart Tools" is very cool - it has five different tools, including a metal detector, but it costs $2.50. - sheureka

I believe that Jerry references the testing of the magnetometer in his review posted yesterday on the AC homepage. Check up on that.

But yes, I do believe this is just the device used as a compass.

Its a three axis sensor chip in the phone that measures the local magnetic field strength of earth. It gives you a strength and direction on each axis based on your orientation to the magnetic field lines..This data can be used to calculate your relative bearing from magnetic north(i.e compass)..If your phone is display(screen) up, and you dont rotate it out of the horizontal plane, then all you need is the Mag_x and Mag_y components to compute your heading...If you rotate your phone out of the horizontal plane, you will need a rotation transformation to map back into inertial coordinates from the newly rotated body(phone) coordinates..Only when they are aligned(earth z and phone z axis) are the rotation matrices basically identity or =1..
