Mail app wont stop scrolling back to top

I use a Galaxy tab s9 ultra and the email app with the red envelope as the icon. My problem is every time I try to delete multiple emails by scrolling and checking the boxes for the emails I want to delete the mail program keeps going back to the top of the list every so often as I scroll. Does anybody else have this problem and is there a solution?

Are you touching the top edge when this happens? Some apps have this 'gesture' hard-coded in to scroll to top/bottom of a list.

I thought of that so maybe I just need to be extra careful.
