Maintenance Update - Root Questions

Seems to be a lot of confusion on this update.

If you wish to root your phone in the next day or two... don't apply the update. Per Droid-Life.com the maintenance update patches the exploit unrevoked used to gain root. Give them a few and it should be functioning again.... this is for those only who have S-ON and no Forever.

For those of you who are rooted... with S-Off... refer here if you wish to install the update manually to retain root.

so you can still s-off post-patch. OK, and with that s-off, you have to manually go in a root your phone, which is an arduous task in of itself.

Worked perfectly and was pretty painless.

Thanks !

I feel extremely ignorant in posting this but where do you get the file he speaks of in step 13:

Copy ClockWork Recovery 2.5.0.5 (PB31IMG).zip to just plain PB31IMG.ZIP on the SD root.

as well as step 17:

Copy su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip to the SD card root.

The link he posted in the follwing line has links to them at the top of the page.

Thanks, feel like an idiot that I missed that.

Not working at all for me. Very irritating.

Maybe a dumb question... but, once I've downloaded the OTA zip file, do I rename THAT "update.zip", or unzip the file and rename the firmware zip contained within "update.zip" before copying to the sd card?

You download the zip file drop it on your microsd card and rename it update.zip. Unless it doesn't already say .zip at the end, then you just rename it update.

**PLEASE HELP**

I made the mistake of un-rooting and installing the new update for my Dinc. I no longer have S-Off and am unable to boot into Clockworkmod Recovery. I have tried to re-root using Unrevoked3 without any success. I've also tried flashing recovery without any success. Anytime I go to do something in recovery, I now get this error: " E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command". I then hold the vol-up and power and try to load the recovery file and get an error saying: "Install from sdcard. Finding update package, opening update package. E:failed to verify whole-file signature, E: signature verification failed, Installation aborted."

I have tried to go back to stock 2.2 so that I can hopefully root again. I put the update.zip file on the root of my SD card and go to recovery on my phone, getting the same error above, so I vol-up and power, then select the "install sd card update file" but get an error saying something like," ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/231334:user/release-keys invalid. Installation aborted."

Is there a way of downgrading the update? Can I re-root, or do I have to wait and hope the Unrevoked updates to be compatible with the Dinc update?

Thanks for any help.

Does this update really need to be installed? Seems like trivial items to me. I imagine I can work through the walkthrough and install it but dont really know if its worth it. Only reason I ask is Im thinking about going back to my Incredible over my Fascinate until 2.2 is out for it

Im not all that good with some of this rooting business unfortunately.

I installed the update and I had issues with stability. After a couple of days of crashing, I went back to a nandroid backup I took before I updated.

Hmm good to know. Can ROM Manager make a backup of the current ROM? I have rooted mine but have not messed with anything yet.

Yup... on the bottom where it says "Backup Current Rom". Or you can just boot into recover and do a Nandroid manually.
