Major data usage issue!!!!

My google pixel xl has started chewing through mobile data. I've checked the data usage and the background OS is the culprit, in an hour it can use up to 1 GB whilst the phone is just in my pocket. Also it will fail to install the latest update though the issue started about the time it was released.

i have factory reset, changed all settings i can think of to WiFi only but still hasn't helped.
even thought it was a virus but running a malware scan hasn't shown any problems

My Pixel has been a data hog from the get go. About 1GB higher than the 6p ever did. No nefarious apps are doing it, and if they are they don't show up in the settings.

This is your problem. It is downloading, failing to install, then downloading again. It will do this over and over until it gets updated. I even turned automatic updates off to prevent this, but it didn't help. Once it knows it's there it will try to download it. Used 5gb of data in 4 hours when 7.1.2 came out.
