Making a call to Verizon tomorrow about this data garbage

Somehow I have to thing that a lot of this is Verizon's network and not the phone itself. I realize that people have compared signal strenth numbers with other phones in the same locale, but not getting any data in Manhattan for a whole night, then getting it, reeks of a network problem. This has gotten to be similar to ATTs debacle when the iPhone dropped.

Nah. I've been to countless Verizon stores in LTE markets. I've tested the signals and bandwidth speed of all the LTE phones. The Nexus always comes in dead last. Half the time the Nexus can't even pull in a 4G signal. I'm still a believer of it being a hardware issue.

Well, I have a new sim card now but the issue seems to remain. Even when I have enough signal to text or make a phone call, I have zero data.

The guy in the Verizon store said he thinks it's a network issue, that his Razr Maxx has the same problem and he's heard others complain of the same.

I'm hoping that the software update addresses this at least to improvement, if not resolution. Otherwise, not much else I can do. The phone is great (especially rooted), the data dropping thing just sucks.

Oh and switching to CDMA mode doesn't seem to help either. I'm done messing around, I'm just going to sit tight until I can flash a 4.0.4 update.

The first two Nexuses I tried out exhibited the same frustrating data dropping behavior as detailed in this thread. Finally gave up and went with a Rezound and just like that, signal strength was no longer a concern...at all and I mean whatsoever. The Rezound just did it's thing and I always had data. So I was definitely thinking that based on experience, it's a Nexus hardware issue.

Week ago, I get an itch to try out another Nexus, tired of waiting on an OTA to address known issues. Ordered it from Amazon Wireless this time, rather than go through Verizon again, I figure why not mix up the source a bit (plus the price was great). This one shows up with 4.0.2 already on board and lo and behold...no data issues at all. I mean none, as in rock solid as my Rezound. (I still have the Rezound to make direct comparisons with.) Week in and it's been great. I was even sitting in a movie theater the other night, checking to make sure the ringer was off and was pleasantly surprised to see three bars of 4G. The first two Nexuses I had would have all gray bars and saying the mobile network was disconnected any time I went into a building it seemed.

I don't think it should take multiple attempts to get a "good one" of course, and I hope an OTA is on the way to address the outstanding issues, but when it works, it works, and is absolutely capable of obtaining and holding a strong signal.

My unscientific opinion, based on nothing other than my own experience, is that the first batch(es) shipped suffered from some manufacturing/QC issues. Some of that stock is still floating around out there, most likely in Verizon's inventory.

Keep harping on Verizon until they get you one that works the way it should! I couldn't agree more, top priority should be signal.

I unlocked and flashed the 4.0.4 update and data switching is much better. The signal is a bit better too, but not by leaps and bounds. I'm at least getting a trickle of 3g where I had none with 4.0.2, and had a good signal with my OG Droid. That's definitely something to try if you haven't already.

I can understand there's going to need to be a tweaking time for new phones, and radio strengths may vary a bit, but how can this still be an issue with modern phones? On a CELL PHONE, radio strength should be the TOP priority!

Verizon payola to make people use more wifi? :)

+1 4 this post just root it's too easy not too. Wugs root tool kit and others make is seamless!

I've been saying this forever! There are bad batches of this phone! Mine exhibited no problems whatsoever.

But see, my phone has no SIGNAL issues per se - I can virtually always make phone calls and send SMS. It's just the DATA where I experience issues.

Just this morning, someone with an iPhone was sending me some important text messages, but I couldn't download them because no data (and for some reason iPhone messages show up as MMS and require a data signal to see them). Total *garbage* behavior.

My plan is to flash the 4.0.4 update, see if that helps, and if nothing else I'll try and replace the device once or twice. If no go, I won't hesitate to take advantage of my Costco swap thing and get a Rezound or something else.

Er... is there a way to flash 4.0.4 while still using Codename? I'm not quite sure on the difference. I posted this on the rooting section too.

I know what you mean. I can't believe I'm doing it but, I'm switching to At&t and getting a Galaxy note.

I'm was one of the biggest supporters of the Nexus phones (still am) but this whole experience has been different. I have no issue with the phone itself, especially since I manually updated to 4.04. My main thing is the accessories that we were supposed to get. I'm real big on accessories like a car & desk docks. They still have no docks that utilize the pogo pins. It seems like Samsung doesn't care about the Gnex.

I also would at least like to get decent LTE in my home. My other LTE devices (MIFI & Xoom) can get 4G LTE in my home but, the Gnex almost never. The Gnex will show it's on 4g when I'm connected to my home network but, as soon as I switch off wifi the data immediately starts struggling.

I never have issues with phone calls. There does seem to be a delay when I'm calling out but, the calls are always clear. I'm switching to the Gnote because - besides really liking the phone - I will have 4G and HSPA+ and even if I only get HSPA+ in my home, that will be nice. At&t works really well in my city. I have two other VZW lines with the Xoom and MIFI so, if they come out with something I like I can always switch back when my upgrades come up.

Qnet... I love my nexus but I can't stand the crap signal. I can't believe how bad it actually is. I don't get a 4g signal at home at all. Barely get a 3g signal. I seen the note the other day at a kiosk. My wife was happy that it was only available on At&t cuz it just means I can't actually get it. Lol. Its a little on the extreme for size but I do like it. I'm gonna call Verizon today to see what the excuse will be. I got an extremely good signal when I had my charge.

My 4g connection is pretty crappy as well.. At work, I'm always going in and out of 4g, while my co-worker has a Charge, and his 4g is strong all the time. I now turn off my 4G all the time, because the time it takes to switch from 4g to 3g is ridiculous. I don't get that great of reception in Orange County, California. I'm not in some small town.

I'm rooted, and have been thinking about flashing some new radios on here. Can anyone link me to a good guide or a video?

It's a nice phone. I played with it at the At&t store. It doesn't operate quite as smooth as the Gnex but I've seen some videos of it running a leaked version of ICS and it was nice, even with the touchwiz.

When I get the Gnote I'll keep both phones for a little bit just to compare. I got 30 days to make a decision. It's strange, as much as I coveted the Gnex, I may have it for the least amount of time than any phone I've owned.

I'm tenuously happy to report that after flashing a 4.0.4 radio, my phone seems to be handling data much better. I actually saw it switch from 4g to 3g tonight (usually it will just drop data altogether, and then eventually get 3g). And now, sitting exactly where I was getting NO data earlier, I have 3G.

I don't even care about 4g that much. I'll take it when it's available, but to leave me with no data is unacceptable. I think this indicates that this is likely a software issue, and if the 4.0.4 radio doesn't resolve it completely, maybe future ones will. From what I can tell so far, this is at least an improvement. Over the next few days, I'll update to indicate whether the problem is actually resolved.

I'm staying for the long haul! I'm sick of trying to find the device of my dreams....
This is my last smartphone. I'm going to use this Device and tablet combo for years . Hell I haven't had the data loss YET... but I know it happens I also know any phone will have problems. So no more shelling out $$$$ for mobile stability. My nerves can't take anymore letdowns!

Glad to know these issues may be awaiting me when I switch from my Bionic this month to the Nexus. Been having zero issues with Bionic since first update.

Beware of the grass is greener syndrome...lol. All I will say is just try your best to hold on to it since its not giving you any problems.

Sorry to hear yall's troubles...I on the other hand live out in the sticks and get excellent 4G coverage. Full bars all the time and never had data drop. I'm actually quite surprised to get such great coverage out here. Sprint was a hit and miss..more on the miss side. With them I was lucky if the person trying to reach me actually could if I was inside my apartment. This place is like an underground bunker as far as reception goes. But my Gnex on Verizon manages to keep connection.

I totally second the bad batch theory. First Nexus - okay with signal. The screen had a smudge under the glass. Had to replace it (buttery fingers). The second one - pretty okay, but then a few days in, terrible service and continuing terrible service - also tons of random reboots at the beginning (happened with the first Nexus too). The next one I didn't even bother activating because of the screen imperfections. Just activated the 3rd until the 4th comes tomorrow. I'm giving up to. I'm taking the screen issues to Samsung as a last deal just to see what they say, then I'm kissing Sammy goodbye. Too many flaws with this and my sister's Fascinate. My Fascinate had been perfect till it was stolen, but that phone had serious issues too. Best of luck!
