Android Central Question

Hi if I visit a dodgy website and click on it by mistake can it download a virus on my phone or do I need to give it permission to download it

Welcome to Android Central! That's highly unlikely. "Drive-by" malware is exceedingly rare, since malware on Android almost always has to be installed to cause problems (which is why they always try to fool you into thinking you're installing some important app).

What do you mean by "pictures in my gallery"? Which link did you click?

Just because there are some images downloaded on the phone doesn't mean your data has been compromised. I really don't think you're in any danger.

Its photos which I took of me and my family in my gallery plus all my other data and the link I clicked on was the (sparklesrm.com)

So what do you think

Am really panicking

As mentioned before, malware works by having you approve of its installation. If something downloads but isn't installed, it doesn't do anything. I think you're fine.

Here's my usual spiel about malware:

For the most part, it's still quite difficult to get an actual virus on your phone, because malware requires you to manually accept the installation (which is why they try to fool you into thinking you're installing something legitimate). Use common sense:

1. Avoid shady websites that deal with things like porn, gambling, and "free" (aka pirated) apps/music/movies.

2. Never ever tap on a link that appears in a popup while browsing, especially if they're warning you that your phone is infected -- they're just trying to scare you into installing some bogus "antivirus" app that is probably malicious itself.

3. Only install apps from well-established app sources like Google Play Store or Amazon Appstore. Read a bunch of app reviews before installing an app to look for any complaints about adware or suspected malware.

4. Turn on Google Play Protect features in Settings>Google>Security (or in the Play Store settings). This allows Google to periodically scan your phone's apps to look for malware.

5. Turn off "Unknown Sources" in Settings>Security (or in Special App Access on newer phones). This prevents any app that wasn't obtained from Google Play Store from being installed (which could include malicious apps that are inadvertently downloaded).

Many people get spam calls, even from abroad. That happens to me, but my Pixel 3 XL is great at identifying spam and not even bothering to ring. Which phone do you have? If your Phone app doesn't have its own spam filter, then check with your carrier. If they don't have a spam filter feature either, and if you continue to get spam calls, then you could always ask your carrier to get a new number.

Ok so it ain't connected to the website then

And it's a Samsung Galaxy

Just worried me that website then 2 days later that phone call
