maps metric measurements

My google maps displays all of it's measurements in metric, except for directions. (eg. From a to b it is 0.3 miles).

I tried to locate a reason for this metric-ness, but the only thing I can come up with is it's based on your location and what location you set the phone to be. I'm in Tucson, Arizona so not that far from the border, but still far enough I'd think for it to register US customary measurements

I live in the middle of GA and I have been living with this for about a year or so, except, my maps is ok (shows miles) its Latitude that is always metric. Done lots of searching for a fix, found none. Hope you come up with something. I'm kind of surprised that more people haven't made an issue of this. I use the IHO mod, I think it has something to do with that, but who knows?
