Maybe this explains the rebooting/bad battery life?

You know I have been reading many of the discussions here and on other forums about battery life. I've had my X since 7/16 and have been getting maybe 13-14 hours out of it. Not great compared to my Storm 2 but I took that with a grain of salt because, as my non-techie wife put it - "maybe its because you keep playing with it?!".

Well, I think as of yesterday I finally got it where I want (with about 10 apps installed) and decided to actually get some work done (I'm a teacher on summer vacation now getting ready to get back to work in a week or so).

Anywho I charged it up last night as usual and took it off almost 9 hours ago and have been using it about the way I did with my Storm - pretty much not doing a whole lot as I am working on lesson plans.

My current status - I am still at 90% after 8 hours, 38 minutes! Cell standby 56%, Display 34% and Phone Idle 10%. I've used it to check about a half dozen emails or more. Sent a couple texts and a few calls. I've woke the screen up many times just to keep checking on the battery. So far I am pretty impressed...

Whats the brightness setting on these peoples phones? Cant it just be what happens to a battery when you have a monster touchscreen?

Why does something have to be wrong with the phone?

BTW, I get from 0530 am to 0230 pm with a 100% before I plug it in to save shut down. So I get 7 hours until I hit 15% warning.

I have the following widgets running:

Pandora
Toggle widgets
WiFi manager
Smooth Calendar
Android Central
At Bat 2010
social network updater
Facebook
Foursquare
Seesmic

I have the following turned off

WiFi
Bluetooth

I actually played NFS for a bit and played Robo defense for a bit.

Moderate texting, moderate web surfing, no phone conversations

I took it off the charger at 7:00 AM and it is now 4:45 PM - almost 10 hours

Battery at 50% wut wut!!!

I ran mine into the ground last night and then charged it for maybe 10 hours. I also updated this morning to the newest version of Beautiful Widgets, plus I ran the screen at 10-20% brightness all day (with one or two brief exceptions) and I'm at 40% after 10 hours. That's not too bad, but we'll see how it goes.

What I want/expect as a customer is to get 16-17 hours (i.e. a waking day) even with moderate to mildly heavy use, and I'd like to keep the screen brightness at 30 or 40% (depending on ambient lighting) and have a couple extra widgets running. Perhaps I'm expecting too much...but it's not like I think I should be able to watch videos all day, or have the screen turned all the way up.

This might sound crazy but the verizon store by my house is offering a 2 hour class first sunday of the month for the droid x, I plan on going this sunday. I have read so many different things on this battery issue and I hope to get my point across in person about it and possibly learn from it to. My husband said Really going to a class for my phone REALLY.!!! LOL, He thinks Ive lost it but It might be helpful, Shoot I paid money for this phone and I want to get everything I can out of it including a good battery to enjoy the phone, So you may want to check your local verizon stores to see if they offer it. Im in florida

So ... a little update from my DX. I'm currently at 13h 20m 53s with 30% battery left. I really think SetCPU is where my battery life savings is coming from at this point. I'm VERY happy I rooted my device. I was happy with the 9:30ish without the root but with the root and SetCPU the battery life has been AMAZING!

With 3% left...

Here is my tidbit of info. As rion_j recommended, I installed and ran JuiceDefender. I immediately installed the toggle mobile data widget. I kept 3g off when I didn't need it and am going on the 15 hour of being unplugged and I'm at 70%. I've had the longest battery life so far with this app.

what is the toggle mobile data widget?? Is it an app I have to install or is it already on the phone and how do you use it, any special setting for juice defender or the other one??

on the 40% after 10hours have you done anything lse with phone email texts calls etc ????

Yep, its all in the screen brightness. In fact I think the auto brightness might not be accurate. Using a low percentage, if not zero really improves.

so, here is my next update on Juice Defender. let me just say this if your having trouble with battery: GET IT NOW! I went from 10hrs on average to 16hrs yesterday and that was after I installed the app 5hrs into my original charge. Not only that, but I had 20% left when I put it back on the charger at 11PM. This tells me that it's all about the 3G data being turned on all day. This app automatically toggles it off when not needed, and uses WIFI instead. It's a FREE app, and you dont need to do anything special with it. Just let the app set-up on it's own and leave it alone. I'm back in love with my X again!

I received a lot of emails, mostly just checked and deleted them. A couple of text messages, maybe 30 minutes of web browsing. I left the phone to run down overnight so I could drive the battery into the ground one last time and it died this morning at 7:30. So about 20 hours, although obviously quite a lot of that was just standby. I think I may try Juice Defender to see if it'll cut me some more slack with the screen brightness and web browsing areas.

Of course I want to charge the phone for a couple more hours first... :p

The toggle widget comes with the JuiceDefender app when you install it. Very simple to use. Press once and it gives you your default user settings, press 2 times and it gives you your JuiceDefender settings and the 3rd press turns off all mobile data completely.

I agree 100% with rion_j, if you care about battery life, get JuiceDefender as it will save you completely.

I've been unplugged since 2:19 p.m. yesterday and I'm still unplugged and I'm at 20% now. going on 24 hours.

One thing that I do notice though is that when I go to Battery Use in the settings, it doesn't show the total hours since unplugged for some reason, it still says like 7 hours.

I need to look into this Juice Defender, or call Verizon. I took my X off the charger around 7:00 am this morning and it has been completely dead -off- since 2:30 pm...and this is almost every day for me. I even had it stuck on a car charger during lunch. BlueTooth is only on when the phone is plugged into car charger, turned off immediately when I get out. No wifi or GPS. I use it mainly for email and TXT-ing, which, thanks to swype, I love on the X. I have my battery profile in Battery Saver mode. Light web use, because it just doesn't render pages all that quickly. My Storm 2 with Opera Mini was almost as fast...seriously. I think I may have just gotten a bum unit. It is painfully slow surfing the web most times.

It seems like every time I open ATK, Pandora, Scanner Radio, Amazon MP3, Social Networking, City ID, and a host of all these other apps are somehow open and running, and I never opened them to begin with. Is it because I'm running too many wigits? I've got a news feed streaming in RSS from three different sites, Moto Calendar, Smart Calendar, Moto Weather, Twitter and FB native, stock music player (to play songs I loaded into the X - See the thread I started about how I have been unable to do even that with my NON-protected library), ESPN Scorezone, and the Photo Gallery. Do I need to remove some of these?

I dunno, guys. I'm having serious buyer remorse. This might sound insane, but I'm starting to really miss my Storm 2. The calendar was easy to use and see (I can't even open the Moto one in month view. Had to download an app and dump a widget to do even that), the web has been a little faster on the X (and bigger, of course - I know, I know - That's what she said), but I swear not all that noticably vs. Opera Mini, the apps were easy to use and could be turned off (why can't you just "close" these Droid apps when you are done? It makes no sense. Then it reopens them anyway). The bottom line is that the Storm 2 worked for me. Every day I stayed on top of everything. This X does not. I've never made it through a single day on my X and am by no means a heavy user. Then I'm on edge all day about missing an important email. I'm a professional musician and a missed email can mean a missed gig, which means a missed paycheck. Not good - I need to be connected all day. I'm going to try some of the stuff people here are talking about, but if I can't even get my music library onto this thing and a full day of use out of it, I've gotta call Verizon.

Bald Steve, your aggravation is legit; I would be pissed too. Something you might do is backup your stuff somehow, and do a factory reset. Seemed to greatly improve everything for me. Also, I tried ATK for a while, and now I dont use it - the phone runs better without.

@Bald Steve - All of those widgets you have on are killing your battery. I've been ****ing around with this thing since launch. I have narrowed it down to having social media only updating over wifi. Using the score center, pandora, and slacker radio apps instead of widgets. I even am starting to think that Pure calendar and pure messenger are sucking the life out of my battery also.

I've been removing and adding stuff for testing nearly every day. I've almost gone out and bought a BB at least 6 times since I've gotten this phone.

With all the stuff you mentioned on I had the exact same battery life you had. From 6:00 am till about 2:00 pm and it was dead.

Since I have been using apps instead of widgets I can go 16 hours easily. That's even using it for a couple of hours of surfing the internet before going to bed if I'm too lazy to use my laptop.

All I can say is I'm glad I did not buy that Blackberry. Been there and done that (Curve 8320). I wanted a good phone, a good camera, an HD video camera, And a small tablet all in my pocket. A BB won't give me anything close to that. Keep messing with it and you see for yourself.

Also from what I've been reading in this thread, I might try putting a a lot of that stuff back on the phone and use Juice Defender.

Good luck

not sure if you read my statment about my brother in law but go back a few pages, same thing happened to him, he had the storm and the x and was frustrated, until he went into verizon they looked at his phone and said he had a bad battery, they gave him a new one, ever since hes been making a full day of the x and hes a heavy user..Frankly I feel the battery should be able to hold up to the phone for a full day of heavy usage. Isnt that the purpose of the phone is to be able to do all the stuff it offers?? I went from the Dare to the Droid X and I love it my first smart phone but I am too dissapointed in the battery but I dont use as heavy as some people my battery sounds like its better than yours but I was spoiled by my dares battery only had to charge every 3-4 days and Im a heavy photo person and facebook person. So we will see. The verizon store by me is offering a 2 hour class this sunday on the droid x im going more so to find out about this battery thing??? I dont want to change phones as I love what the Droid x can offer And im finding myself using it more like if I had a laptop with me. So we will see, But definatley if you like the phone dont give up Im sure theres a solution for this battery problem

I had Juice defender for about a day and got rid of it because I didn't know if it was actually doing anything good for my phone. After reading some user reviews here, I'm gonna give it another try over the weekend. I don't really have a need for background data except for gmail so it may help alot. Thanks for the help guys!

Maybe I will try set CPU. My battery is just not as good as I experienced with the droid and I'm running virtually the same set up. I've also gotten over the honeymoon phase so I'm not always messing with it like I first started haha

went in to my verizon store and shored them that I had only had my phone off of the charger for about 6 hours. Battery was at 50%, and I had made just over one hour worth of calls.........and the calls were what was draining my battery .....65% of the battery drain. I showed them via the battery manager. without a hitch, they got me a new battery and took care of it. I didn't even ask for it.

I hope that is all it is, although I was told by verizon tech support (611) that they are waiting for Froyo to come out as Motorola has informed them that the battery issue is a software related item and Froyo will take care of the problem.....interesting.......
