Maybe this explains the rebooting/bad battery life?

I always leave gps turned off and only turn it on when an app prompts me to like if im using Yelp or Where! Then once im done and exit the program, i switch gps off again

Are you saying somehow my gps is still on despite me switching it off?

Yes, I'd say that the good folks here at Android Central (and maybe a couple of other similar sites) need to replicate the issue themselves so they are convinced, and give it front page coverage. There's a reasonable short-term fix (GPS toggle on your home page) but it needs to be addressed in the 2.2 OTA, if not sooner.

No, if you manually switch it off afterwards I believe you are fine. The problem is that while the system "shuts down" the GPS itself for other users, it's unable to truly go into sleep mode without a manual shutdown, so instead it's running at 100% even while "asleep" if you don't do a manual GPS toggle.

no u can manually switch it off after ur done and it still runs the cpu at 100% meaning it isn't powering down. its not the gps that is sticking on. its the gps cauing the cpu not to sleep correctly and still run. some people are repoting having to toggle it off then on then off then on then off to get the cpu to power down and read less than 100% on spare parts app.

its hard to say whats causing it at the root of the prob but the gps initates the cpu to run hard, so when u put ur phone to sleep , it is supposed to power down and sleep, but with this bug it is running at 100% while its chillin in ur pocket. it dont even run at 100% when ur on the phone or browsing the web or multi tasking on it, thats why its killing batts in 5 hours with min. use.

ok im confused, what are you all talking about putting your phone to sleep? I leave my phone on all night so incase of an emergency I can be contacted. but my screen goes blank and locks after 30 seconds of not using??? DO you hut your power off?. I keep my gps off unless Im using it for directions or mapping.

Ok, "going to sleep" is when it's sitting around with the screen off and the phone should be doing little more than basic functions...i.e. it should be conserving battery. The problem is there seems to be a bug (and at least two-dozen people have reproduced it) where when the GPS turns on for any reason the CPU won't really go into sleep mode, even after the GPS has stopped being used. The workaround is to have a manual toggle and turn the GPS off and then on (apparently sometimes more than once) and this allows the CPU to properly go into sleep mode.

You should never have to power down your phone, unless you're on an airplane, or doing an upgrade of some sort that requires it.

Ugh, today I've had the phone reboot spontaneously twice when turning the GPS off and on. Seriously, this needs to be addressed.

I had installed JuiceDefender (free) on Tuesday night. I just installed it, let it set up with the default settings and clicked the Enable button. Yesterday, I pulled it off the charger at 7 AM. With my normal usage of the phone (net use, little texting, emails, phone calls and listen to an audio book for about 4 hours) I had 60% of my battery when I went to bed at 11:30 PM. As far as I'm concerned, that awesome.

In case any of you don't know what JuiceDefender does, it manages the time your phone has a data connection. Anytime you have the screen on, the phone is connected as normal. If your screen is off, the JD terminates your data connection (you can still receive both text and phone calls) for 15 minute periods. By default, it does 1 minute of data connectivity for every 15 minutes idle. You can change that to 1 minute every 5 or every 10 minutes if you want. If you are holding the nuclear launch codes, expecting an email from the President (like he'd have the balls), then this isn't for you. But if can wait 5 minutes between getting emails, it's perfect. The X seems to keep an extremely frequent data connection in order to check gmail for contact, email and calendar updates, as well as a host of other junk that moto has on there. It's a pretty big battery drain. JD controls it better.

Yes, JD does a good job, but the GPS/not sleeping issue is also draining batteries; heck, the X may have really excellent battery life (as the reviews said) if both these issues are fixed.

(once again: Battery Drain due to Software Bug w/GPS? - Android Forums) By the way, the GPS/can't sleep bug explains why SetCPU is so effective at extending battery life...it's forcing the CPU to do what it SHOULD be doing automatically when it goes into sleep mode.

This can (and should) be fixed, but it may need a bit more attention before Motorola moves it higher on the priority list. The X is such a fantastic phone, I hate to think of how many people's user experience has been marred due to these bugs.

i reproduced it last nite before i went to bed. and i woke up and it has been off charger since 3am and its got 90% left so far lol. we need to blow this up somehow????

I started a thread just on it. If more people here reproduce it I imagine it'll start to get some more coverage. It's nice that there's a workaround, although I should note that my phone has rebooted itself 3 times today when I toggled the GPS off (it happens perhaps 1/10 times...but it's still annoying).

I'll have to wait till I can test it myself tonight...I strongly think it's real (I see no reason to call more than 3 dozen -at last count- people liars) but I'm not going to call their tech support until I've replicated it.

Besides, a couple of well-placed front page discussions (if the mods here or on other sites confirm it and want to let people know how to do the work-around) will probably get a swifter internal response then individual phone calls.

I'm guessing that JuiceDefender is turning off GPS as I notice that the GPS icon in the top bar is not present since I installed it. As my battery is now lasting a solid 24 hours with JD running, it must be truely shutting it down. It does pop right up and work if you launch Google Maps/Navigation, then goes away again after you close it. Doesn't mean there isn't an OS software issue with GPS, but JD seems to be taking care of it for me.

it dont matter what is showing if its on or off. cause its not the gps thats the issue, the gps is causing a malfunction in the system and making it run at 100%. the gps being on has nothing to do with the bug being in effect, it does when u use it and then close it out, it kicks the bug in. so the gps can be on and then off and the bugs gonna kick into effect.

Ok, so one work week into my Juice Defender usage and I'm ready to post more thoughts. My initial post about the software made it seems like Jesus-ware or something. Now, I'm not as thrilled. When looking at my juicePlotter graph. My battery seems to drop 10% every hour to hour and a half. So basically I get 12 good hours out of the phone. Which sounds good, but taking the phone off the charger at 7 in the morning, it means I will have to charge it during my drive back from work. Gonna disable JuiceDefender for a few days and see what happens...

everyone call moto with the issue 800 331 6456

so I emailed motorola about this issue and this is there reply. A matter of fact this was there answer for everything I asked them>>>>

Dear Teresa,

Thanks for reaching out to Motorola. I?ve reviewed your e-mail and I?m ready to help.

We would recommend that you do a master reset on the phone.

Perform a Factory Data Reset

If you continue to experience issues and nothing has worked, performing a Factory Data Reset will clear the phone's memory and put the phone back to the original factory default state. Factory Data Reset is a tool used to remove everything that was imported, added or installed on the device. Use as a last resort. Keep in mind, when using this feature; everything is deleted. You will need to start over as if the handset were brand new (minus activation). You will need to re-enter your Verizon Wireless Backup Assist Pin, Google information, and any social networks or other email accounts previously set-up on the handset. Nothing stored on the MicroSD will be affected. Your contact and email information is automatically backed up to the either the Gmail server, Verizon Backup Assist application, or both. That information will be restored when you set-up those applications again with your user name and a password.

Marketplace Applications you have recently downloaded are cataloged within the Marketplace application and can be re-installed after the reset by entering the Marketplace application. Open Marketplace application. Press Menu hard key, select Downloads, and the select those applications to re-download and install to your handset.

To complete a Factory Data Reset:

From any homescreen of your phone, tap the Menu hard key.
Tap Settings.
Scroll down and tap Privacy.
Scroll down and tap Factory Data Reset.
Tap Reset Phone, confirm to execute.

After the Master Reset and you're still having issues with it. It is advised that you need to contact Verizon or send in the phone to Motorola's repair center.
