Lollipop rendered my phone useless to a few apps. Can i root back to kitkat?

Are you s-off ? if you are then you can RUU back to KK. If not then you will need to get s-off. By the way what carrier ? some carrier don't offer RUU's

No, i'm not s-off. I'll have to go thru the whole process. Never had the need to root the m8 because it was absolutely flawless. That is until they forced lollipop down my throat. I'm on Verizon.

If you're willing to go the custom ROM route, then unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery, and flash a Kit-Kat or Lollipop custom ROM, they're ten times better than stock from my experience.

Any specific recommendations?

Looks like i'm stuck as there is no way to root an HTC running lollipop right now. Never need to root my phone because with KK it was PERFECT. Now i'm forced to deal with a buggy phone until a root method is released.
