Memory - 1 GB?

This device is supposed to have 1 GB of RAM, if I understand correctly. In my Task Manager, it shows only ~670 MB. Quadrant (a benchmarking tool) tells me the same thing.

What does your guys' Task Manager screen say?

Here's mine.

Weird, I wonder if ~320MB is reserved for some system processes only. What are the rest of you guys seeing?

I dropped by the AT&T store today, both of the demo units they had also had 670 total. I guess the other 330 is reserved for system stuff.

Definitely feels like 150-200 free is not a lot, though.

My UK tegra 3 version shows pretty much the full 1gb....

You have to think OS itself is weighing in somewhere around the low 100 megabyte mark and then throw in your standard Google apps and then carrier/HTC bloat your probably getting close to the 180-200 megabyte mark... The remaining 100 or so is then as Kevin mentioned being reserved/used for system processes.

Can anyone else with a Tegra 3 version please check on the RAM under Task Manager?

I wonder if us AT&T users got gimped on both storage and memory...

I chalked it up to it not showing the memory set aside for the os but as the screenshot above that doesny seem to be the case. Also the tegra 3 shows the same amount of ram used, just less ram free.

This is definately weird, is there something software going on? The free space doesn't seem like a lot, and I wonder if it is the reason why whenever I switch to another app android always seems to close down the last app I was using.

For example if I'm in the browser and check a text that comes in and I check it it always seems to reload opera when I switch back. I basically can't multitask as I always have to load the background app again.

Yeah the reloading thing is pretty annoying - same in Chrome and the native browser.

Different GPU takes a different amount of RAM for VRAM.

The T3 is taking some as well, but it doesn't report it the same way. This is perfectly normal. The missing ~320MB is for radio, kernel, GPU, and cache and allocated at boot.

The part of that I don't understand though is if that was the case the first tegra 3 should show the same amount of free space as the s4 just more used space.

But its the other way around, they have more free space, and the same amount of used space. So what I'm seeing is that the s4 version takes about 300mb more ram to run than the tegra 3.

The T3 has to take a bunch as well. For some reason it doesn't get reported the same way. My TF Prime shows the same thing, the full 1GB available, but I know the kernel, cache and GPU have to be loaded into RAM or it wouldn't be running.

More than likely NVIDIA reads and writes from a different place in /proc for RAM allocation, and nobody ever thought to tweak the build to reflect it.
